Huskies, Lady Huskies finish third in their divisions at home meet

The sun came out and the meet was on Friday in Burlington. Snow Thursday dampened spirits for a while, but by the time the meet started it was almost all gone. The track was a bit wet, and there was a lot of wind, but, as Olson said, it was coming from the north which helped some of the hurdlers – and maybe even a few runners.

The boys scored 101.5 points, coming in behind Worland (103.) and Lovell (136.5).

Multiple top eight finishes in multiple events gave both teams the edge they needed to outscore five of the eight-team field.

In the boys competition, four scored points in the 1600-meter run and high jump, and three scored in the pole vault; for the girls, four were in the top eight runners in the 1600 meters and three were in the top eight in the 800 run.

Coach Ryan Olson said despite the chill and the wind, there were 18 personal bests recorded.

With a home meet, and with some athletes nursing nagging injuries, Olson let the athletes pick the events they wanted to participate in; some event they just wanted to try, and some events, such as a number of relays, were not run at all.

“There’s just three weeks left before regionals,” Olson said. “I want the kids to rest up, recover, get in shape for the culminating season meets.”

Olson was glad several teams (Lovell, Worland) came to compete. “Their meet on Thursday in Powell was cancelled due to the snow. We were glad to have them.”

In a large meet held in Powell April 10, freshman Jessie Michaels set state qualifying times in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs; Jack Gotfredson AQed in the pole vault and Gideon George qualified in the long jump, giving him four AQs this year.

Along with the AQs, multiple athletes set personal bests marks, which always pleases Coach Olson. Nothing makes him happier than adding name after name to the “wall of fame” at the school.

Both teams finished the meet in fourth place in their respective competitions. The girls scored 53 points, the boys 81.

Burlington will be competing in an invitational meet in Lovell Saturday; events start at 9:30 a.m. It should have a good mix of representing all for classes.

Olson said Lovell meets are always well run; he’s expecting that will be true Saturday.
