Chicago – The state Tuesday turned its full strength into the prosecution of the Chicago White Sox baseball players and others charged with the alleged conspiracy which resulted in the 1919 World Series scandal, sending Bill Burns, admitted accomplice of the defendants and who turned state’s evidence in return for immunity, to the witness stand to tell the inside story of the reported sell-out of some of the game’s greatest players to gamblers who wanted the Series thrown to Cincinnati.

Young “Dicky” Mangis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herb Mangis, made the catch of the week recently when he grabbed a good-sized fish out of the ditch in front of the W.B. House store. Towns located nearer the mountains, such as Lander, have long boasted of fishing within the city limits, but this is the first one reported in Lovell.

50 Years Ago, July 22, 1971

The water storage tank on Shoshone Avenue will be back in service this week, city manager John Nickle said, after extensive repair, which included patch welding both inside and out by Earl Dickson
earlier this spring. Recently, Earl Norton was employed to sand blast the tank to its bare metal, after which epoxy liner was applied to the inside and the outside repainted.

Thirteen-year-old Jennifer Townsend of Cowley won the title of 1996 Young Miss of Wyoming following the Distinquished Youth of Wyoming Scholarship & Recognition Program in Casper this past weekend. Townsend said the message she would like to get out to young children during her year reign as Young Miss is to “be involved in positive activities.”
