Horses go for high dollars at Cody sale

POWELL (WNE) — Jake and Kay Clark’s Ralston property was filled with horses last Friday, and many of the people who would, after seeing them perform, turn around and pay top dollar the next day.
When the Cody Horse Sale was over Saturday and the fencing next to The Irma was taken down, sellers had pulled in an average of $17,203 per saddle horse, according to show results, with the top two horses going for $59,000 and $58,000.
Dillon, a 4-year-old blue roan Quarter Horse/draft horse cross gelding from RMO Horses, fetched the top price.
Smokey, a 4-year-old Paint gelding from A-J Horses, nearly matched that total.
TJ Clark, who manages the Cody Horse Sale, said this year’s result was pretty similar as far as prices and horses are concerned.
“The draft crosses seem to be bringing the most money,” he said.
And the show continues to bring in people from all over.

Beware of Medicaid scams

RIVERTON (WNE) — With new reports of callers wrongly seeking money, Wyoming Medicaid is alerting clients and their family members to be cautious of potential Medicaid coverage scams.
Wyoming Medicaid is part of the Wyoming Department of Health.
A handful of clients recently received calls asking for their credit card information to process payments to renew Medicaid coverage. The calls may have come from numbers that appeared to be used by previous contractors for the Wyoming Medicaid program.
Wyoming Medicaid and the related Kid Care CHIP program never charge clients directly or ask for money from individuals for enrollment purposes.
The department does use contractors to help with its Medicaid operations.
Current legitimate numbers for Wyoming Medicaid applications and renewal are as follows:

Wyoming’s largest city, Cheyenne, gained the most population in 2023

CHEYENNE (WNE) — Nearly two-thirds of the 31 large cities and towns (over 2,000 people) in Wyoming added residents between July 1, 2022, and July 1, 2023 when the largest city, Cheyenne, added the most residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
These new estimates provide a look at how the population has changed in each of Wyoming’s incorporated communities since the 2020 Census.
For cities and towns with population over 2,000, Mills demonstrated the fastest annual growth (2.1%), followed by Pinedale (1.9%) and Sheridan (1.8%), while Cheyenne (585), Sheridan (338), Casper (236) and Gillette (218) showed the most numerical addition from 2022 to 2023.
Three cities, Rawlins (-138), Wheatland (-66) and Kemmerer (-43) experienced population declines of more than 1%. Rawlins is the only place that lost more than 100 residents during the year.

Voters wishing to switch parties have until May 15

For voters and candidates alike, some significant dates on the 2024 election calendar are approaching.
The filing period for municipal, county, state and federal offices that will appear on the Aug. 20 primary election ballot opens Thursday, May 16 and closes at 5 p.m. Friday, May 31.
Candidates for municipal office may file at town hall, county candidates may file at the courthouse and state and federal candidates may do so with the Secretary of State’s office.
If you did not vote in the 2022 general election, you may register in advance with any municipal clerk or the county clerk, or at the polls on election day.
The big change this year is that voters who would like to change their party affiliation must do so before 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 15. No party affiliation changes will be accepted between May 16 and the primary election. To do so, contact either a municipal clerk or the county clerk.

Banks to seek re-election to House District 26 seat

With the filing period approaching, Republican Dalton Banks of Cowley announced last week that he will seek re-election to the District 26 seat in the Wyoming House of Representatives.
Banks was elected to the seat in 2022, when he emerged from a race with Tim Beck, Gary Welch and Tim Mills to win the Republican nomination and advance to the general, where he ran unopposed.
Looking back on it, Banks believes he’s a more well rounded candidate now than he was then.
“I felt like my first term, I was like a sponge, soaking in so much, getting to understand the process, getting the instutional knowledge cemented in my mind,” he said. “I left the last session feeling like I’d done that.  The institutional knowledge is there now.  The knowledge about the legislative process, it’s there now.  
“I think it will make me a better legislator because I understand how important relationship building is.”

BHC sees increase in tourism impact

A recently released report found that between 2014 and 2023, direct travel income in Big Horn County increased by nearly $12 million: in 2014, the direct travel income spent was $28.4 million in Big Horn County; in 2022, it was $38 million; and in 2023, it was $40.1 million.
Piper Singer Cunningham,  a spokesperson for the Wyoming Office of Tourism (WOT), which authored the report, said, “Tourism isn’t just about visiting places; it’s about investing in communities. For Big Horn County, visitor investment supports local businesses, fosters connection, memories and appreciation for our stunning landscapes and vibrant culture. Let’s celebrate these economic impact results and continue to invest in Big Horn County.”

Greybull students qualify for National History Day Contest

Deep dives into the plight of Native Americans in the aftermath of the Sand Creek and Wounded Knee massacres and the Japanese-Americans following their release from internment camps have led to some significant honors for three Greybull students.
Jack Pharaoh, whose documentary was entitled, “With Wounded Knee, We Still Stand,” took first place in the senior division at State History Day held April 29 in Laramie.
Middle schoolers Reagan Vigil and Lilliann Otto, meanwhile, placed first with their junior group documentary, “Executive Order 9066 Japanese-American Internment: Behind the Wire.”
All three qualified for National History Day Contest June 9-13 at the University of Maryland, which is located just 12 miles from the nation’s capitol.

‘Order Up!’ on stage May 17-18

Greybull High School thespians will present their spring play, “Order Up!,” on Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18 in the auditorium.  
Show time is 7 p.m.  
Tickets, at $5 per person, will be available at the door.
Director Em Wilson provided the following synopsis of the play:
“When it comes to fast food, people are particular – very particular.  In this quick succession of quirky customers, the Order Up! Restaurant takes on everything from weird food allergies to fanatical health inspectors, from the fear of eating to someone wanting to hide in the restroom, and on and on and on.  Could there be a moment of sanity for the three employees who work behind this fast-food counter?”
