Schlattmann in driver's seat heading into State Finals

Jake Schlattmann has been the dominant saddle bronc rider all season, winning 11 of the 14 competitions he's entered, and will be gunning for a state title later this week at the Wyoming High School State Finals in Rock Springs.

Very few prep athletes can boast of contending for state championships in two different sports, but Schlattmann is among them.  A recent graduate of Greybull High School, he finished second in his weight class at the state wrestling tournament on two different occasions, losing to truly elite grapplers each time.

Little League teams enjoy successful week

Two South Big Horn Little League teams entered this week with winning records, with the majors squad leading the way with a perfect 4-0 mark.

Sponsored by The SHACK, the senior-level team of 13- to 15-year-olds stands at 2-1 after notching a road win over Thermopolis on Thursday, June 18.

Daryl Shiplet, who is co-managing along with William Lavine, said the team started fast, building a 9-3 lead, but "kicked the ball around a bit in the final inning" before ultimately prevailing 9-6.

Track team caps season at state meet

Aiden Reece placed in two events to pace the Greybull Buffs at last weekend's State 2A Track and Field Championships in Casper.

The senior accounted for all 4 1/2 points of the boys team's points, tying for fifth in the high jump and taking eighth in the 100 meters in his final performance in the blue and gold.  

The lone point on the girls side was scored by members of the 3,200-meter relay team, who posted their best time of the season which was good for eighth place.

Big Horn won the boys division with Burns and Tongue River rounding out the top three.

Opening day brings wins for majors, seniors

Saturday's lineup consisted of T-ball, coach-pitch, minors, majors and, for the first time ever, seniors. 

So if you had the time and were willing to brave the wind and chilly temperatures, you could have seen all levels of Little League baseball being played on the fields of the Art Schutte Sports Complex in Greybull.

It was Opening Day for the South Big Horn Little League and every team was in action.

After a morning of T-ball and coach-pitch, the competitiveness ratcheted up as the day progressed. 

GMS wins a team title, dominates relays at conference track meet

Greybull Middle School athletes dominated the relays while earning both team and individual recognition at their conference track and field meet held Saturday in Shoshoni.

Seven teams competed at the Big Horn Conference Meet, with Shoshoni, Riverside, Rocky Mountain, Ten Sleep, Burlington and Meeteetse joining Greybull.  There was a sixth- and seventh-grade division and an eighth-grade division in the boys and girls competition.

Mustangs competitive in season openers

The Lovell Mustangs American Legion A team kicked off the 2023 season over the weekend with a pair of doubleheaders in Cowley and Sheridan.

The Mustangs split a doubleheader with the Evanston Outlaws Saturday, winning the opener 7-6 and dropping the nightcap 13-11. Saturday across the mountain, the Mustangs fell to the Sheridan Jets 4-1 and 5-1.

With many athletes involved in track and field or other activities, the Mustangs are a bit shorthanded and were especially so on Sunday, manager Michael Jameson said.

South Big Horn Little League chooses own path, adds senior team

Practices have begun at the upper levels and all teams are scheduled to make their season debuts the second week in May as the South Big Horn Little League embarks on its first season as a fully chartered organization.

GBAC enjoys successful state tournament

Twelve members of the Greybull-Basin Athletic Club reaped the rewards of the hard work they invested at last weekend's Wyoming Amateur Wrestling Association (WAWA) state tournament in Casper.

The tournament featured three different styles of wrestling — Greco, freestyle and folkstyle — and one GBAC grappler, Tawny Bertolini, accomplished the rare feat of winning her weight class in all three to become a Triple Crown winner.

Ellie Holloway came close, winning freestyle and folkstyle titles while earning runner-up in Greco.

Buffs make their 2023 debut

As unlikely as it may have seemed early Friday morning with several inches of fresh snow on the ground, a rapid warm-up and dry-out allowed the Bill Gerrard Memorial Invitational to proceed as planned Saturday.

"That was the accomplishment of the weekend for sure," said Nolan Tracy, head coach of the Buffs. "It sure didn't look too promising about 1 o'clock on Friday when there were 5 or 6 inches on the infield, but by 3:30, it was gone."

Thinclads fighting the weather as season nears

If the first couple weeks of practice are any indication of what's to come, the words "weather permitting" might be the most often used as area track and field athletes, coaches and fans navigate the traditional slate of meets leading up to regional and state competition in May.
