Core tourney a big winner for Midway

Midway Golf Course is a special place to the Core family, so when Ginny died in 2020 and Jim followed her in 2021, those left to mourn came up with a unique way of honoring them while respecting their wishes for no funeral services.

It all came together on Sunday when their home course between Greybull and Basin hosted an 18-hole tournament that began with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and ended with a celebration of Jim and Ginny’s lives and their contributions to the community.

In addition the PEAKS to Conga cyclists and the Harley owners passing through on their way to and from Cody, there was a third, far less visible group of two-wheeled adventurers in town last weekend gathering like they always do at the Green Oasis Campground.

This year’s “Yellowstone Rally” attracted 40 dirt bikers from around the world who spent the long weekend riding the backroads and seeing the sights of the Big Horn Basin, guided every step of the way by road books mounted on their bikes.

After 37 years teaching (22 of those at Greybull High School)  and 32 years of coaching a variety of sports, Jim Prather will be clearing out his desk, turning in his “keys to the kingdom,” and walking into retirement at the end of the school year.

McColloch paces GHS effort at state meet

The Greybull Buffs didn’t have the numbers to make a run at a team title, but there was still plenty to rejoice about in the aftermath of last weekend’s State 2A Track and Field Championships in Casper. 

Ten of the 14 GHS athletes that made the trip earned medals — some of them in multiple events — and one Buff, senior Gaven McColloch, joined some very exclusive company with an epic run in the 3,200 meters, in which he became the first Buff to win that 2A crown in more than three decades.

Stella Wade, Torrey Sanford, Katie Murph, Sarah Murph, TJ Davis, Cole Bolzer and Jesus Hernandez took advantage of their last opportunities to qualify for the state meet by placing at the Class 2A West Regional held Friday and Saturday in Shoshoni.

The seven new qualifiers join Gaven McColloch, Irving Castro, Aiden Reece, Caroline Boyer, Kelsie McColloch, Chaise Benasky and Kaylyn Burns, all of whom posted AQs during the regular season.  

The State Track and Field Championships are taking place today through Saturday in Casper.

The Greybull Buffs added two new state qualifiers at the Bobcat Invitational.

Sophomore Aiden Reece soared to new heights in the high jump to become the sixth team member guaranteed a trip to the State 2A Track and Field Championships in Casper.

Reese cleared 5 feet, 10 inches — a 4-inch improvement over the 5-6 mark that had stood as his personal best.  The leap was good for fifth place in Thermopolis.  Four jumpers from 1A Burlington finished ahead of him, with Gideon George clearing 6-4 for the win.

In 2009, Tom Urbach, who coached the Greybull High School Buff wrestling team for 18 years, was induced into the Wyoming Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Relay teams posts wins at Shoshoni

The fact that they were technically off for spring break didn’t prevent a group of about 15 Greybull High School athletes from competing at a meet in Shoshoni on Thursday, April 1.

Coach Nolan Tracy had declared it an “optional” meet and the fact that so many logged practice time and made the trip was seen “a very good sign” of the dedication of this year’s team, which is heavy on freshmen and sophomores.

“And we’d have had a few more go, too, had it not been for some nagging injuries,” he said.

GHS opens track season

Coach Nolan Tracy is expecting 11 or 12 teams and more than 200 athletes to converge on Greybull Saturday for the Bill Gerrard Invitational.  For many of them, it will serve as the opener of the 2021 track and field season.

Field events start at 10 a.m., with the running events to follow at 11 a.m.

“It’s been two years since we had a meet, so just to be able to host one again is great,” said Tracy.  “I was talking to (senior) Gaven (McColloch) about the fact that the last time he and our other seniors competed, they were sophomores.

Weather permitting, the Greybull Buff track team will make its season debut on Saturday at the Wind River Invitational.
