Four returning starters give Buffs hope

The Greybull Buffs came within a basket of qualifying for last year’s State 2A Basketball Championships. As disappointing as that 50-48 regional loss to Tongue River was, coaches and players found comfort in the fact that the core of the team would get another shot.

Ben Kraft was the only senior who saw quality minutes in Riverton and his combination of scoring (11.3 ppg), defense and leadership will be tough to replace. But on the sunny side, the Buffs return everyone else who contributed to that regional squad, including seniors Jesus Hernandez and Isaac Thueson. 

Hernandez makes all-state, four make all-conference

The Greybull Buffs saw one of their players, senior Jesus Hernandez, make the all-state team and four earn a spot on the all-conference first team following the completion of the first nine-man football season in state history.

Hernandez was among the state’s premier defenders.  An end, he was a big-play machine, finishing with 17 tackles for loss and six quarterback sacks.  The 23 behind-the-line-of-scrimmage stops topped all 1A defenders.   Statewide, he ranked sixth in defensive points, averaging 20.8 per game.

Lady Buffs season ends with losses to Big Horn, TR

The Greybull Lady Buffs gave everything they had and a little bit more when they played the Big Horn Lady Rams in the opening round of the 2A state volleyball tournament in Casper Nov. 5.

Playing what could have been their best match of the year, the Buffs went out swinging, not giving an inch. Their fight and determination gave them wins in the first two sets, 25-17, 25-18. 

Things were looking very good.

Buffs fall in double OT, face Lusk in playoff opener

The Greybull Buffs saw an opportunity to win their final home game and build some momentum for  the playoffs slip from their grasp on Friday night, losing an entertaining, double-overtime thriller to Lingle-Fort Laramie, 40-34.

Buffs beat Riverside 28-12, move into three-way tie in conference

Facing a must-win situation, the Greybull Buffs scored 22 unanswered points in the second half to defeat Riverside 28-12 and keep their playoff hopes alive Friday night in the first gridiron matchup between the two rival schools since 2014.

The Buffs entered play as the only team in the West without a conference win.  When the final horn sounded, they had moved into a three-way tie with the Rebels and the Wind River Cougars, all of whom are vying for the league's final two spots in the playoffs which begin Oct. 30.

Lady Buffs notch wins over north-end rivals

The Lady Buffs celebrated Homecoming with a clean sweep of their two opponents, conference foe Rocky Mountain Friday in five hotly contested sets, 25-20, 20-25, 21-25, 27-25, 15-11, and a much easier three-set victory over Lovell Saturday, 25-22, 25-23, 25-16.

Coach Maddy Moody said her team took the floor Friday strong and ready but “fell apart a little in games two and three.”

Down 1-2, the  Buffs had to settle in and win the next two sets.

Cook wins 3A golf title

In a span of about 15 months, Greybull teen Erika Cook went from shanking tee shots and hating the sport of golf to becoming a state champion and leading Lovell High School to the first state golf title in school history.

Home opener ends in heartbreak

The first nine-man football game played on Greybull's home field was a thriller, with the Buffs and visiting Wind River trading blows until final seconds when a defensive stand sent the Cougars home with the 14-13 win.

Lady Buffs beat Wind River, lost to TR

After a three-game victory over Wind River, 25-14, 25-20, 25-22 Saturday afternoon, the Lady Buffs lost the second match of the day in their home gym to the Tongue River Eagles in five exciting, hard-fought  games, 27-29, 21-25,  25-21, 25-18, 14-16.

In the opening win, Coach Madison Moody said the athletes played well together and registered some great stats.

Kylin Stephens, the setter, had three kills and 14 assists while Abby Keisel, also a setter, had 12 assists and served two aces.
