The Lady Buffs had a good opening weekend, but saved the best for the last when they took on Sundance and dominated in two sets, 21-17, 21-14.

Leo Hoflund recorded a hole-in-one Saturday at Midway Golf Course.  He used a 6-iron.  The incredible shot was witnessed by Leo’s playing partner, Rick Bryant.

 

Practices start next week for Buffs

Monday marks the start of the fall sports seasons as students at Greybull High School and around the state begin preparations for their competitive debuts coming up Friday, Aug. 30 and Saturday, Aug. 31.
Football
Coach Jeremy Pouska has announced that the parent meeting will take place Friday, Aug. 16 at the high school gym.  Two-a-days are planned for the first week, with morning sessions running from 6 to 7 a.m. and evening sessions from 6 to 8 p.m.
The regular after-school practices will start the second week, leading into a Week 0 scrimmage on the Buffs’ home field Saturday, Aug. 31.  Pouska said Wind River, Wyoming Indian and Rocky Mountain are expected to attend.
Pouska said he’s optimistic heading into the season.  The Buffs finished 4-4 and missed the playoffs last year, but several key players return, including all-stater Lucas Bolzer and all-conference performers Wyatt Didrickson and Caiden Sorenson.

Forty-eight hit river for third Blueway Trail float

Forty-eight people and one dog gathered in Basin Saturday for the Big Horn River Blueway Trail Float. One of those taking to the river was WYDOT District Engineer Pete Hallsten, who summed up the event with one word: “Groovy.”
 “The Bighorn River Blueway project was born out of a community-led effort in the Bighorn Basin Outdoor Recreation Collaborative and connects the Basin’s communities with Wyoming’s great outdoors,” said Patrick Harrington, manager of the Wyoming Office of Outdoor Recreation. “If fully realized, the project creates unique economic development opportunities along its 95-mile route, while improving local quality of life and access to the river.”
Prior to setting off down the river, a windstorm, lasting 20 minutes or so, put doubts in some people’s minds about doing the float.  By the time the safety meeting was over, so was the wind.

Derby, moto-rodeo bring fair to close

Common sense dictates violent collisions with oncoming cars should be avoided, whatever the cost. However, for competitors in Sunday’s Big Horn County Fair demolition derby, all caution was thrown to the wind as soon as they crossed the gates.

Leftover big-game licenses can be purchased over the counter this week

First come, first served leftover licenses go on sale at 8 a.m., July 17 on the Wyoming Game and Fish Department website, regional offices and the Headquarters office in Cheyenne. The licenses represent the remaining antelope, elk and deer licenses following the leftover draw.
“Over-the-counter license availability changes each year based on what hunters applied for and received in the initial and leftover draws,” said Joshua Moulton, Game and Fish license section manager.
Hunters buying over-the-counter leftover licenses are encouraged to pay close attention to the area and license type.
“The majority of these licenses are in hunt areas in which it may be difficult to obtain access. We encourage hunters to seek permission to hunt prior to purchasing an over-the-counter license,” Moulton said.
The leftover license availability list is posted on the Game and Fish website.

 

Majors’ season ends at district tournament

The South Big Horn Little League All-Stars didn’t get the storybook ending they were seeking at last week’s District 1 Majors Tournament in Bridger Valley.
A first-time qualifier, the club was unable to overcome nerves and inconsistent fielding, losing to the Lander Valley All-Stars 18-1 on Thursday and to the Powell All-Stars 16-6 on Friday.
“We definitely ran into some good teams,” said Brett Patterson, the team’s manager. “Nerves were an issue, too.
“Our kids were experiencing that environment for the first time and it was a big change for them.”
The highlights were few and far between in the matchup with Lander.  The Bandits mustered just four singles, off the bats of Kayson Herebia, Colt Collingwood, Wyatt Kunkel and Kade Julson.
“We were putting our bat on the ball -- they were just going right to their defenders,” said Patterson. “It seemed like they were always in the right place at the right time.”

Powell club spreads love of ‘sweet science’

The organizers of a youth boxing club that sprung up in Powell late last year have begun sharing their passion for the sweet science with other communities in the Big Horn Basin, including Greybull which was the site of a two-day youth camp last week.
The Greybull Recreation District offered the camp, promoting it as a way to learn the basic fundamentals of the sport in a fun, non-contact manner.  Not counting the two who came with one of the instructors, the camp attracted 10 kids, with six in the younger group (grades one through five) and four in the older group (grades six and up).
David Holland, a Greybull native, is one of the driving forces behind the Post 26 Big Horn Basin Boxing Club.  He led the camp with help from a couple of boxers, Adrian and Clint, who squared off in an actual match on the final day.
