Mustangs qualify for state tournament

The Lovell Mustangs are heading to State. With two wins in the first three games at the Class A West District Tournament in Green River this week, the Mustangs advanced to the Class A State Tournament next week in Cody.

The Mustangs brought the big lumber to Green River. They came from behind to clobber host Green River 15-8 Monday night, fell to top seed Cody Tuesday afternoon 10-5, then qualified for State by eliminating Rawlins 17-0 later Tuesday afternoon.

Game one was the key, as the win set up an easier path to advancement. After an early pitchers duel, the Mustangs scored five runs in the top of the fourth, only to see Green River score two in the bottom of the fourth and four in the fifth to lead 6-5.

Greybull woman tackles Bighorn Trail Run

A Greybull woman was one of 202 runners who participated in the annual Bighorn Trail Run June 18 in the Bighorn Mountains.

The trail run has been cancelled the last few years due to the pandemic, but it was back this year and Jenna Schultz made sure to reserve her place. 

Schultz is no stranger to competitive running. She picked it up when she began teaching in La Valle, Wis. in 2009, starting with 5K races. 

“It was a way to be healthy and get out there. I’ve always coached track too. It was just a good way to have fun with the kids too, and getting my runs done with them,” she said.

Schultz is also no stranger to the Bighorn Trail Run. When she moved to Greybull four years ago, she competed in the 18-mile distance of the trail run. Though she’s run several other races in the area, including the Buffalo Bill Cody Half Marathon and a Ragnar Relay in Colorado, Schultz stated, “The Bighorn is my favorite.”

Core tourney a big winner for Midway

Midway Golf Course is a special place to the Core family, so when Ginny died in 2020 and Jim followed her in 2021, those left to mourn came up with a unique way of honoring them while respecting their wishes for no funeral services.

It all came together on Sunday when their home course between Greybull and Basin hosted an 18-hole tournament that began with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and ended with a celebration of Jim and Ginny’s lives and their contributions to the community.

“The day certain met and exceeded all of our expectations,” said their son Steve, who came up from Green River and was joined by siblings Jim from Boise, Idaho; Tom from Wickenburg, Ariz., and Susan Ford from Mesa, Ariz.

Sense of adventure draws dirt bikers to Greybull

In addition the PEAKS to Conga cyclists and the Harley owners passing through on their way to and from Cody, there was a third, far less visible group of two-wheeled adventurers in town last weekend gathering like they always do at the Green Oasis Campground.

This year’s “Yellowstone Rally” attracted 40 dirt bikers from around the world who spent the long weekend riding the backroads and seeing the sights of the Big Horn Basin, guided every step of the way by road books mounted on their bikes.

It was the seventh rally to be headquartered at the Green Oasis and 80-something Mike Carson of Dubois has organized every one of them.  With its wide-open spaces and thousands of acres of public lands, the Big Horn Basin appeals for obvious reasons. 

Longtime teacher says 'Celebrate every day'

After 37 years teaching (22 of those at Greybull High School)  and 32 years of coaching a variety of sports, Jim Prather will be clearing out his desk, turning in his “keys to the kingdom,” and walking into retirement at the end of the school year.

“I guess I was destined for a career in education,” Prather said, “but a better description is a life in education since teaching and coaching has been my adult life. It is all I know, and I came to it naturally. Both of my parents were in education, my father was a high school teacher/coach and my mother was in the early childhood field.”

Prather said he grew up surrounded by teachers and coaches. “They were the nicest, most involved people I knew. They were passionate about what they did. I could see the  difference they made in the lives of my friends and myself. Plus, I loved the competitive nature of athletics and wanted to be around sports in some capacity

McColloch paces GHS effort at state meet

The Greybull Buffs didn’t have the numbers to make a run at a team title, but there was still plenty to rejoice about in the aftermath of last weekend’s State 2A Track and Field Championships in Casper. 

Ten of the 14 GHS athletes that made the trip earned medals — some of them in multiple events — and one Buff, senior Gaven McColloch, joined some very exclusive company with an epic run in the 3,200 meters, in which he became the first Buff to win that 2A crown in more than three decades. 

Blaine Stulc, among the most accomplished track athletes in GHS history, was the last to do it in 1990.

Buffs sending 14 to state meet

Stella Wade, Torrey Sanford, Katie Murph, Sarah Murph, TJ Davis, Cole Bolzer and Jesus Hernandez took advantage of their last opportunities to qualify for the state meet by placing at the Class 2A West Regional held Friday and Saturday in Shoshoni.

The seven new qualifiers join Gaven McColloch, Irving Castro, Aiden Reece, Caroline Boyer, Kelsie McColloch, Chaise Benasky and Kaylyn Burns, all of whom posted AQs during the regular season.  

The State Track and Field Championships are taking place today through Saturday in Casper.

Coach Nolan Tracy said he’d have been “ecstatic” if someone would have told him at the beginning of the season that he’d be taking 14 kids to Casper.  “I thought we might have one or two kids that go as AQs — and we had seven, which was a surprise.  Then we ended up with seven more going by place – another surprise.”

Summing it up, he said, “Our kids did really well.”

Reece, Castro join state qualifiers

The Greybull Buffs added two new state qualifiers at the Bobcat Invitational.

Sophomore Aiden Reece soared to new heights in the high jump to become the sixth team member guaranteed a trip to the State 2A Track and Field Championships in Casper.

Reese cleared 5 feet, 10 inches — a 4-inch improvement over the 5-6 mark that had stood as his personal best.  The leap was good for fifth place in Thermopolis.  Four jumpers from 1A Burlington finished ahead of him, with Gideon George clearing 6-4 for the win.

Coach Nolan Tracy said he wasn’t surprised by Reece’s effort.  In practice, he’d cleared 5-8 and come close on his attempts at 5-10.  With the competitive juices flowing, he produced a personal record when it mattered most, leaving nothing to chance for this weekend’s regional.

Father, son make WCA history

In 2009, Tom Urbach, who coached the Greybull High School Buff wrestling team for 18 years, was induced into the Wyoming Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

  Twelve years later, in June of 2021, Tom and wife Deb will be at the Wyoming Coaches Association Hall of Fame banquet for the induction for their son, Nathan. 

Relay teams posts wins at Shoshoni

The fact that they were technically off for spring break didn’t prevent a group of about 15 Greybull High School athletes from competing at a meet in Shoshoni on Thursday, April 1.

Coach Nolan Tracy had declared it an “optional” meet and the fact that so many logged practice time and made the trip was seen “a very good sign” of the dedication of this year’s team, which is heavy on freshmen and sophomores.

“And we’d have had a few more go, too, had it not been for some nagging injuries,” he said.

The meet was a small one, with the Buffs and host Wranglers being joined in the field by athletes from Thermopolis, Wind River, Riverside, Burlington and Western Heritage.  No team scores were available early this week.

It was a good day for Greybull’s relay teams, as both the 400-meter and medley foursomes captured first place in the girls division.
