Cook wins third straight 3A title

The Lovell Bulldogs golf team concluded the fall golf season with a strong showing at the Class 3A State Tournament Friday and Saturday in Buffalo.

The Lady Bulldogs placed third at State with a team score of 615, seven strokes ahead of Cody and 38 strokes behind Evanston. Wheatland won the girls title for the second straight year with a team score of 552.

Greybull junior Erika Cook won her third straight individual state title but it wasn’t easy. Cook and Isabell Salas of Green River were tied after both shooting a 76 after day one. On day two, Cook shot an 80 and Salas an 82 as Cook won the title by two strokes.

“After the first nine holes on day two Erika was down by four strokes,” coach Dane Robertson said. “She had to make a hard push on her back nine to claim her third straight individual championship and she made it happen. She fought and battled back and ended up winning by two strokes.

Bad Medicine Ride brings cyclists to Shell

Saturday’s Bad Medicine Ride went off without a hitch despite the heavy rain that fell in and around Shell on Thursday and Friday.

Wet conditions forced organizers to make some course alterations, turning the 32-mile course into a 35-miler and the 56-mile course into a 55-miler.

Buffs put one in the win column

For the second straight season, the Greybull Buffs opened with a win on their home field, knocking off Moorcroft 28-14 in a nonconference nine-man game Thursday evening.

From an aesthetic standpoint, the game won’t end up on a wall of the Smithsonian. Defenses dominated. Neither team finished with a positive rushing total (Moorcroft’s net was -103, Greybull’s -19) and the teams combined for 18 penalties, seven turnovers and multiple breakdowns on special teams. 

But a win is a win, especially for a Greybull team breaking in new starters.

“It was extremely important for us to start off on the right foot,” said Coach Jeremy Pouska. “Hopefully it correlates to more success this year and in the kids gaining confidence in themselves and the program.”

The Buffs never trailed, scoring the game’s first points on a safety (stemming from a bad Moorcroft snap) and tacking on six more soon after on a 14-yard pass from Joel Miller to Aiden Reece.

Jake Schlattmann made the most of his second National High School Finals Rodeo appearance, placing seventh in saddle bronc at the national competition held last week in Gillette.

The Greybull High School senior to be and son of Dean and Sara Schlattmann improved on his finish from 2021, when he didn’t qualify for the short go after getting bucked off on his first ride and scoring a 46 on his second.

“I definitely wasn’t as nervous this time,” he said.

It showed, as he posted scores on all three of his rides.

His first produced a score of 70, which put him in the mix to make the short go but still left him a bit disappointed.

“I wanted to win – everybody wants to win, right? – but after the first horse, I was pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to score enough to do that,” he said. “At that point, I just wanted to make the short go and place.”

He achieved the former and gave himself a shot at the latter by posting a 67 on his second ride.

Mustangs qualify for state tournament

The Lovell Mustangs are heading to State. With two wins in the first three games at the Class A West District Tournament in Green River this week, the Mustangs advanced to the Class A State Tournament next week in Cody.

The Mustangs brought the big lumber to Green River. They came from behind to clobber host Green River 15-8 Monday night, fell to top seed Cody Tuesday afternoon 10-5, then qualified for State by eliminating Rawlins 17-0 later Tuesday afternoon.

Game one was the key, as the win set up an easier path to advancement. After an early pitchers duel, the Mustangs scored five runs in the top of the fourth, only to see Green River score two in the bottom of the fourth and four in the fifth to lead 6-5.

Greybull woman tackles Bighorn Trail Run

A Greybull woman was one of 202 runners who participated in the annual Bighorn Trail Run June 18 in the Bighorn Mountains.

The trail run has been cancelled the last few years due to the pandemic, but it was back this year and Jenna Schultz made sure to reserve her place. 

Schultz is no stranger to competitive running. She picked it up when she began teaching in La Valle, Wis. in 2009, starting with 5K races. 

“It was a way to be healthy and get out there. I’ve always coached track too. It was just a good way to have fun with the kids too, and getting my runs done with them,” she said.

Schultz is also no stranger to the Bighorn Trail Run. When she moved to Greybull four years ago, she competed in the 18-mile distance of the trail run. Though she’s run several other races in the area, including the Buffalo Bill Cody Half Marathon and a Ragnar Relay in Colorado, Schultz stated, “The Bighorn is my favorite.”

Core tourney a big winner for Midway

Midway Golf Course is a special place to the Core family, so when Ginny died in 2020 and Jim followed her in 2021, those left to mourn came up with a unique way of honoring them while respecting their wishes for no funeral services.

It all came together on Sunday when their home course between Greybull and Basin hosted an 18-hole tournament that began with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and ended with a celebration of Jim and Ginny’s lives and their contributions to the community.

“The day certain met and exceeded all of our expectations,” said their son Steve, who came up from Green River and was joined by siblings Jim from Boise, Idaho; Tom from Wickenburg, Ariz., and Susan Ford from Mesa, Ariz.

Sense of adventure draws dirt bikers to Greybull

In addition the PEAKS to Conga cyclists and the Harley owners passing through on their way to and from Cody, there was a third, far less visible group of two-wheeled adventurers in town last weekend gathering like they always do at the Green Oasis Campground.

This year’s “Yellowstone Rally” attracted 40 dirt bikers from around the world who spent the long weekend riding the backroads and seeing the sights of the Big Horn Basin, guided every step of the way by road books mounted on their bikes.

It was the seventh rally to be headquartered at the Green Oasis and 80-something Mike Carson of Dubois has organized every one of them.  With its wide-open spaces and thousands of acres of public lands, the Big Horn Basin appeals for obvious reasons.
