Elwood Despain Emmett

[caption id="attachment_7473" align="alignleft" width="90"] Elwood Despain Emmett[/caption]Elwood Despain EmmettApril 6, 1928 - Jan. 13, 2014Beloved father, grandfather and brother, Elwood Despain Emmett, 85, died on Jan. 13, 2014, at his home in Lovell, after a short but brave battle with cancer. Elwood was born April 6, 1928, in Lovell, the son of Paul Silas and Julia Eva Despain Emmett.Elwood was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served in many callings and touched the lives of many people.  He served as a teacher in the Primary, Seventy’s Group Leader, Stake Missionary and Cubmaster.  He especially loved serving in the Billings, Montana Temple, where he served from 2002 through 2013.On July 10, 1952, Elwood married his sweetheart, Clara May Jensen, of Cowley. They were married in the Idaho Falls Temple.Early in their marriage, he worked for the Johnson Saw Mill on the Big Horn Mountains.  Later in the spring of 1957, he began working for Great Western Sugar Company/Western Sugar Company, where he later retired in the spring of 1994.  He worked year round and on the sugar end during campaign.  Elwood was a lifelong Democrat and once ran for the State Senate on the Democratic Party ticket.Elwood was an avid rock hound.  He loved gardening, and his favorite rose was Betty Prior. He also loved to experiment in science as he was always curious about everything and was always seeking knowledge and understanding. He was a 4-H leader.Elwood was preceded in death by his wife Clara May Jensen Emmett; his infant son Elwood Dale Emmett; his parents, Paul Silas and Julia Eva Despain Emmett; his two infant sisters; an adult sister, Nina Emmett Godfrey of Salt Lake City; and son-in-law Frank Barrus.He is survived by his children, Allen J. Emmett (Barbara) of Stockton, Calif., Alvin Scott Emmett (Elaine) of Lovell, Terry Lee Emmett (Rita) of Cheyenne, Sheryl Emmett Goodrich of Farmington, Utah, Barbara Emmett Barrus of Powell and Gary Curtis Emmett (Brenda) of Lovell.  He is also survived by his brother Norald Silas Emmett (May) of Lovell and his sister Leta Emmett Gifford (Tex) of American Fork, Utah.  Elwood is also survived by 25 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren, with two more expected later this year.Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at 10 a.m. at the LDS Stake Center in Lovell. A viewing will be held Friday, Jan. 17, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Haskell Funeral Home. There will also be a viewing on Saturday morning from 9 to 9:45 at the LDS Stake Center.The family wishes to express thanks to the friends and extended family for all of their kindness during this difficult time.
