Hyattville to host Cowboy Carnival Sunday

Load up and head to Hyattville Sunday for the 20th annual Cowboy Carnival.  Bring your lawn chair and spend the day.
Organizer Mary Hyatt Burns said two special events are back this year.  Todd Jones’ “packing demonstration” will include a few basic knots, finding gear and selection of animal. You will get some actual hands-on experience. It starts at 10 a.m.
Also back this year is music by Liam and Layne Jordan. The twins are from Hyattville and recently recorded an album.  They play a mix of folk, country, alternative and classic rock, along with original music.  They play from noon to 2 p.m.
Also returning are favorites such as Chauncey McMillion Memorial Sheep Dog Trails, quilt show, historic displays, photo contest, kids activities, a ranch BBQ meal, homemade pies and ice cream.

Wyoming Reads puts books in students’ hands

First graders in Greybull celebrated Wyoming Reads Day on Tuesday, May 15, at the Greybull Public Library in partnership with the Greybull Elementary School Library. First graders from Mrs. Otto and Mr. Carney’s classes met at the library to listen to a story and hear about the library’s summer programming, which will be held each Wednesday in June. Afterwards, Wende Jenness, the Greybull Elementary Librarian, presented students with a book of their choice from the Wyoming Reads list and was one of many literacy celebrations occurring across the state after Gov. Mark Gordon signed a bill into law in March, which marked the third Tuesday in May, “Wyoming Reads Day.” The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Art Washut, was introduced during the 2024 Wyoming Legislative budget session, at the end of the Wyoming Reads 25th Anniversary year.

WYDOT announces reopening of US Highway 14A

SHERIDAN (WNE) — The Wyoming Department of Transportation has opened US 14A.  
This year’s early opening is due to the unseasonably low snowfall this past winter. Accumulated snow depths and drifting on US 14A were significantly lower than previous years, which allowed maintenance crews from Burgess Junction to begin work on snow removal earlier than normal.  
WYDOT typically opens US 14A the Friday of Memorial Day weekend.
US 14A is one of four mountain passes that are affected by seasonal winter closures. This 22-mile stretch of scenic mountain road is located in the Bighorn Mountains of north central Wyoming. WYDOT closes these routes in the late fall once maintaining the roads due to heavy, drifting snow makes it difficult and impractical.
Access to many forest service roads is not available and motorists are asked to stay on US 14A and not attempt to access any other roads at this time.

Court News Search of home leads to arrests, seizure of drugs

A Division of Criminal Investigation-led search of a home in Greybull last Wednesday resulted in the arrests of three people and the seizure of fentanyl, methamphetamine and other drug paraphernalia.
Jacob Sales, 31, is facing two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance — one for methamphetamine, the other fentanyl — and a single count of possession with intent to deliver a Schedule II controlled substance, which is also a felony.
Also arrested were Joel Anderson, 29, who has since been charged with possession of a controlled substance, third or subsequent offense; and Kristi Arellano, 33, for misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance.

Manderson man faces 17 felony charges

A 41-year-old Manderson man is facing multiple felony charges alleging that he physically and sexually abused a woman over a 10-day period last month.
Arthur Floyd Jones, 41, has been charged with 15 felony counts of sexual assault in the first degree, two counts of felonious restraint and five misdemeanor counts of domestic battery.  
The sexual assault charges split into two categories with 10 alleging he inflicted sexual intercourse by actual physical force and the other five alleging he did so by threat of death, serious bodily injury and/or extreme physical pain.
Prior to his arrest, Jones appeared on the state’s sex offender registry for a 2015 conviction in Wyoming for sexual assault in the first degree, with intrusion. He also has convictions for failing to register as a sex offender in Colorado.
Jones’ case has been bound over to Big Horn County District Court.

Man pleads not guilty to sexual assault

Casey Neumeyer, of Greybull, was arraigned on Tuesday on charges of sexual assault in the first degree in the Fifth Judicial District Court of Big Horn County where he entered a plea of not guilty.
Neumeyer remains in custody at the Big Horn County Detention Center on a $50,000 cash bond after the prosecution declared him a flight risk. Neumeyer hails from Idaho where a warrant exists in his name after he failed to appear in court; prosecutors told Judge Bobbi Dean Overfield they felt Neumeyer could not be trusted if left to his own recognizance, given his history and a job offer he received in another state shortly before being arrested.
Neumeyer stands accused of having assaulted a woman while she was incapacitated. If convicted, the felony charge is punishable by imprisonment between five and 50 years and/or a fine not to exceed $10,000.

Council rejects request to take over Shell Town water system

The Town of Greybull won’t be assuming responsibility for the water system that serves the approximately 40 users that are part of the Shell Town Water Improvement District.
At its May 13 meeting, the council voted to deny a request from representatives of the district, citing outstanding issues related to easements and rights-of-way as well as concerns about the impact it could have on the public works crew.
“I’m against it,” said Councilman Jeremy Kottman.  “I’m not saying that within five to 10 years, we can’t.  But with the inexperience of our crew — they’re doing good and time will improve them — but for now, I’d rather they focus on right here, the town.”
Council members suggested that they would be willing to reconsider the district’s request within a year, with the hope being that the easement/right-of-way issues are properly researched and resolved by then.
