Downtown storefront boasts two new shops

Jessica Johnston and Thia Stanzione celebrated the grand opening of their new downtown storefront at a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday morning.
Mama Tried Boutique and The Broom Closet Metaphysical Store share the space, which proffers unique clothing and accessory pieces alongside metaphysical and holistic lifestyle supplies.
“We’re both encouraging people to find their authentic selves,” said Stanzione. “It’s okay to live outside the box and not fit into the norm that society thinks you need to live in. I think that’s what we’re both bringing to the table.”
The owners said fate played a role in their decision to open a storefront together. Both participate in pop-up events in the area, and they set up together at Greybull’s recent wine tasting event.

Storm produces record October snowfall

South Big Horn County, and in particular Greybull, Basin and Shell, appeared to get the worst of last week’s storm that brought an abrupt end to the fall.
Adam Dziewaltowski, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Riverton office, said weather observers in both Shell and Basin recorded 10 inches of snowfall between Wednesday, Oct. 25 and Friday, Oct. 27.
Dziewaltowski said the NWS hasn’t had an official weather observer in Greybull since 2019, but imaging suggests that 6 to  8 inches fell, with some isolated areas receiving as much as 10.
“According to our records, which go back to 1951 and up until 2019, that would likely have been a record for the most October snowfall ever in Greybull,” he said.  On average, Greybull receives about seven-tenths-of-an-inch of snow in October.

Runway damage threatens ‘24 race season

Speaking at the Oct. 17 meeting of the Big Horn County Commission, Kip McIntosh of Cloud Peak Drags/KCT Racing and County Airport Manager Paul Thur agreed that the damage to the runway sealant was nobody’s fault.
Cloud Peak’s last race at the South Big Horn County airport was in August. A test double coating had been put on the runway. The goal was to get more years out of the surface.
 McIntosh explained that he sealant apparently did not cure completely. It loosened up by the afternoon in the heat and was spinning the sediment until the original pavement was exposed. They cut the race short when they saw what was happening.

Patrick takes over as new director of The SHACK

Jenn Patrick will serve in a new joint-position at The SHACK, continuing as the nonprofit’s program director in addition to taking over as executive director after David Bottom stepped down on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
Patrick was first approached to take over the CEO position at the beginning of the year. She brought a fair amount of experience to the role, having served as program director for 12 years.
“For us, Jenn was a natural first ask,” Bottom said.
The past six months have seen Patrick training with Bottom to fulfill executive director responsibilities.
“We’ve teamed up on a lot of stuff over the past 12 years, so I’m used to seeing David do it or participating in the work as well,” Patrick said. “But I am learning the things David did that I wasn’t a part of, like grant writing.”

Three Rivers Health officials have analyzed the input they received from a recent community health needs assessment and are developing a three-year strategic plan they hope to have in place by Jan. 1, 2024.
CEO Joel Jackson offered a preview on Wednesday night, sharing a draft version developed over five hours of internal discussions in mid-October.
Board members simply got their first look at it.  They along with staff members will have opportunities in the weeks ahead to suggest changes.
The draft version presented last week included proposed mission and vision statements, along with six core values.
The TRH vision is “to be the facility of choice for healthcare by exceeding the expectations of those who live, work and visit the Big Horn Basin.”

Halloween Happenings

Here’s what planned for Halloween over the next several days in south Big Horn County:
Thursday, Oct. 26
• Wyoming Retirement Center Halloween Carnival, 6 to 8 p.m.
Friday, Oct. 27
• The Greybull Elementary School Student Council is hosting a haunted house at the Big Horn County Fairgrounds in Basin, 7 to 10 p.m.  Along with a haunted house there will be a carnival for children who don’t want to go through. Cost is $5 if you want to be scared or $5 for 10 games at the carnival.
Saturday, Oct. 28
• Saam Vet Clinic Annual Pet Costume Contest, 10 a.m.  Pets should be on a leash or in a carrier.
• Greybull Elks Lodge Hallowbean Cornhole Tournament.  Play begins at 3 p.m.  Register early on the Scoreholio app or in person at 1 p.m.   Calcutta at 2 p.m.  This is a 32-team, double elimination tournament. Big Horn County unemployment rate falls to 2.7%

The Research & Planning section of the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services reported today that
The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged from August to September at 2.9%, according to the Research & Planning section of the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services
Wyoming’s unemployment rate was much lower than its year-ago level of 3.8% and lower than the current U.S. rate of 3.8%.
Seasonally adjusted employment of Wyoming residents fell slightly (-403 individuals, or -0.1%) from August to September. However, compared to a year ago, employment was up by 7,745 people (2.7%).
From August to September, most county unemployment rates followed their normal seasonal pattern and fell modestly.  
Big Horn County saw one of the largest decreases, falling from 3.2% to 2.7%.

Tickets on sale Monday for fall musical

Aspiring actors and actresses are hard at work learning lines, songs and finding their footing on stage for the upcoming fall community musical “Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of the Crown Jewel.”
Tickets will go on sale Monday, Oct. 30. They can be purchased at the high school office in advance or at the door for $8 per seat or $7 for kids 10 and under and seniors over 60. Please bring exact change.
The musical will open for a three-night stand Nov. 16-18. Performances are at 7 p.m.
Gifted musician and GHS grad Michael Yenny will serve as the accompanist and this season’s vocal director.
“It’s a wonderful thing because we get to explore the singing process,” Yenny said. “We work on concepts such as breath control, vocal resonance, vowel modification, consonant energy and so on.”

Fundraisers to help with local boy’s medical costs

Two-year-old Owen Kinane gets to come home on Sunday after a month-long stay at the Children’s Hospital Colorado following a leukemia diagnosis in late September.
“He’s tired, but on the whole, he’s doing as well as he can for the diagnosis he has and for the stage of the treatment he’s in,” said Rebecca Kinane, Owen’s mother.
Owen had a reoccurring fever for three to four weeks prior to his diagnosis, but his parents initially thought it was due to kids being back in school and sickness going around their church. It was at a church activity Rebecca noticed the high energy levels and healthy color of the other children compared to her son.
Owen visited the hospital in Powell on Sept. 27 to get his blood drawn. “Before we even left the parking lot, she called and told me he needed to go to the ER because of how anemic he was and how elevated his white blood cell count was,” Rebecca said.
