Council grants CUP for Airbnb over objections

Is an Airbnb just another type of rental property or does the short-term nature of its stays make it more akin to a motel?

Greybull Town Council members have been wrestling with that question and others since their September meeting, when Ian Crouse’s request for conditional use permit to operate an Airbnb at 700 N. Third St. generated arguments on both sides of the issue.

Chinese restaurant to close

A popular Chinese restaurant in downtown Greybull, Lan's Beijing Garden is closing at the end of the week.

Lan Kang, who took over the restaurant after the passing of her husband Denny in 2020, says it's her only option, pointing out that her cook and friend Martin Tang is returning to China and that she's been unable to hire anyone to replace him.

"It's sad," she said. "I've been here for a while and the community's been very nice to me."

Beijing Garden opened in September 2009 under the ownership of Denny Kang.  He ran it by himself for several years before he and Lan met and she moved here in 2014.  They married early the next year and they ran the business together until his death in March 2020.  Since then, she's been at the helm.

Hospital-run medical flight service begins next week

Promising high-quality, cost-effective air medical transport services, Cody Regional Health and St. Vincent Healthcare intend to launch their First Flight of Wyoming program on Sunday, Oct. 1, with South Big Horn County Airport in Greybull serving as base of operations.

Phillip Franklin, the Cody Regional Health EMS director, said two years of planning have gone into the launch.

"We started having internal discussions about it six or seven years ago when we were hearing patients in communities talking about the high cost of air medical transport," he said. "It eventually got to the point where we decided it would be the best thing for them to provide a more affordable service."

First Flight of Wyoming charges 30% to 40% less than private, for-profit air medical transport services, according to a release from Cody Regional Health and St. Vincent Healthcare, which is now part of the Intermountain Health network.

Report finds Big Horn County leading in age 65+ chronic disease rates

A recent report that profiled healthy aging indicators for residents 65 and older in Wyoming’s 23 counties concluded that Big Horn County led the state in several chronic disease rates.

The 2023 Wyoming Healthy Aging Data Report was compiled by researchers at the University of Massachusetts Boston in partnership with the Wyoming Healthy Aging Coalition and the University of Wyoming. 

The report’s purpose is to help local and state decision makers and agencies understand the older adults who live in their communities—their health status, strengths and vulnerabilities—in order to improve aging in Wyoming.

Roughly 1 in 5 residents in Big Horn County fall in the 65+ population, with 57% between 65 and 74 years old. This “young-old” population makes up the fastest growing age group in the state, according to the healthy aging report and the Wyoming Department of Administration and Information.

Council wrestles with Airbnb issue

A request for a conditional use permit has put the Greybull Town Council in the position of needing to decide whether allow the continued operation of an AirBnb in an residential area or reject it due to fears about the potential impact it would have on the neighborhood.

Council members heard from both sides on Monday night before tabling the matter until next month.  Ian Crouse, the owner of the home at 700 N. Third St., is seeking the conditional use permit.  Described as a "cozy brick house," it is one of nine in the Greybull town limits listed on the official Airbnb website. The list includes a couple offerings from local campgrounds.

As part of the application process, Crouse was asked to gather input from property owners within 300 feet of his property. With their signatures, 12 neighbors voiced approval of his CUP request while three opposed.

GHS offers new CNA certification program

Among the new class offerings at Greybull High School this year is a CNA certification program taught by school nurse Tracy Boyer, which gives students the opportunity to earn a CNA license by the end of the school year.

A CNA, or Certified Nursing Assistant, works in a hospital or long-term care facility and assists nursing staff with patient care. Their primary responsibilities are to assist activities of daily living, including feeding, dressing, hygiene and exercise.

“The nurses and healthcare staff really look to them…they play a huge role in providing patient care,” Boyer explained.

Boyer said a CNA class has been in the works for a few years now, with her and GHS principal Ty Flock buckling down last August to implement the program in the district.

Slick track impacts August drag races

Cloud Peak Drags organizers were pleased with the car count and turnout for their August races, but not so much with the resurfaced crosswind runway that doubles as their drag strip at the South Big Horn County Airport.

Saturday's event attracted approximately 60 cars and trucks. Cloud Peak Drags estimated the turnout at around 400, with 330 of them paying the admission fee and kids 12 and under, who got in free, accounting for the rest.

The racing organization has had better seasons.  Inclement weather impacted the first two dates on this year's schedule.  While the May races went on, the June get-together had to be cancelled, wiping away what's normally the biggest event of the season.

This time, the weather was perfect, but the track was not.  Big Horn County resurfaced the runway earlier this summer. The sealer that was used contained a substance that "made it slicker than heck," said Kip McIntosh of Cloud Peak Drags.

Junior livestock sale grosses $274k

Despite having 17 fewer animals up for bid, the Big Horn County Fair junior livestock sale still managed to eclipse last year's total as buyers shelled out more than a quarter million dollars for steers, lambs, hogs, sheep, goats and rabbits Saturday afternoon in Basin.
