Carol (Mobley) Daniels

1936 – March 28, 2021

Carol Daniels, age 84, passed away of cancer on March 28, 2021. Her daughter Beth was by her side.

A loving and devoted wife and mother, Carol loved life and had many interests which included river fly fishing, camping in the mountains, gardening and reading. She was an avid follower of area college and high school sports, both girls and boys. She also enjoyed watching Gonzaga, the Seahawks and the Mariners. Carol also adored each of the many family cats over the years.

Carol was born on a farm near Greybull, Wyo. She particularly had fond memories of the spring/fall cattle drives that were 50 miles to/from the Big Horn Mountains, via horseback. During her senior year, her mother died after an extended illness.

Carol graduated from Greybull High School and moved near maternal family in Spokane. She earned her degree in English/journalism at Eastern Washington University. She edited the school yearbook and newspaper. She then worked for a farm newspaper in Idaho Falls before joining the Spokane Daily Chronicle.

Carol and Don F. Daniels met at EWU where he was attending on the GI Bill. They married in 1960 and welcomed daughter Beth in 1961. When Don became disabled, the family moved to Thompson Falls, Mont., where Carol began a teaching career of grades seven through 12 that lasted 33 years. She earned her teaching credentials nights and summers at the University of Montana.

Carol had already been the advisor for the GAA (girls athletic association) when in 1968 she began her coaching career with interscholastic girls' track. This was well before Title IX was enacted to give equal opportunities to girls' athletics. She continued coaching various girls' sports, including volleyball and basketball, into the 1980s.

The family moved to Tekoa, Wash., in 1974 where Carol joined the teaching and coaching faculty. She had many fond memories of her students and the many activities she was involved with.

Carol continued her love for journalism by working at the weekly newspapers in Thompson Falls and later Tekoa. In 1999, due to an extended illness, Carol retired early. She and Don moved to Spokane in 2002 to be close to needed medical facilities. Don passed away in 2009.

Carol was also preceded in death by her parents Glenn and Marieta (Reed) Mobley, and siblings Joyce, Bill and Dave Mobley.

She is survived by her daughter Beth Daniels and niece Karen Mobley, both of Spokane. Carol was a long-time member of the Nature Conservancy and the National Parks Conservation Association. Please consider a memorial contribution to either or The Hospice of Spokane. Per Carol's request, there will not be a service.
