Cheryl Lee Linse

September 11, 1945 - July 9, 2026

Cheryl Lee Linse, 80, of Greybull, Wyo. passed away Thursday, July 9, 2026, in the comfort of her home following a struggle with bladder cancer. 

Cheryl was born Sept. 11, 1945 in rural Washakie County to Clarence and Clarice Haynes. Clarence drove cattle up the Bighorn Mountains from their homestead just past Shell. Cheryl’s pioneering spirit and love of the Bighorns were planted early in life. Shell’s one-room schoolhouse was lacking other rooms, so the family moved to Basin. Cheryl attended school in Basin and graduated from Basin high school in 1964 and completed her RN degree from the University of Wyoming. 

Cheryl’s brother-in-law, Fred Johnson of Basin, takes credit for setting her up on a blind date with Paul Linse of Greybull, son of famous Greybullite, Jack Linse. The Greybull bowling alley provided the setting for the beginning of a love story that lasted 44 years. The instant chemistry and subsequent marriage (on their lunch break) by the Justice of the Peace of Sheridan, Wyo., proved the maxim that, “Greybull boys love Basin girls.”

After moving to Bozeman so Paul could attend MSU for architecture, Cheryl continued working as a nurse. After graduating in 1981, they spent the next two decades in Canada, Hawaii, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Guinea and Vietnam. They moved back to Greybull at the turn of the century to care for Paul’s father, Jack. Upon her return, Cheryl continued as an RN for a total of 25 years for the State of Wyoming until retirement. 

Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Cynthia Johnson and husband, Paul Linse. She is survived by her sister, Carolyn Schuette, and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place at Antelope Butte Crematory and her ashes were scattered next to Paul’s, near Dead Swede on the Bighorn Mountains.
