Joyce Margaret Kogel

April 6, 1926 - Nov. 27, 2025

Joyce Margaret Kogel, 99, passed away peacefully Nov. 27, 2025, at the Wyoming Retirement Center (Basin, Wyo.) surrounded by loved ones. Joyce was born April 6, 1926, in Wessington, S.D. She was adopted by Ernest and Laura (Estes) Carlton shortly after her birth. Joyce attended nurses training after high school in the hopes of joining the war effort. The war ended mere months before the completion of her training; however, Joyce completed her training, becoming an RN. 

She married Harold Kogel Nov. 22, 1947. From this union, two sons, Dale and Jim, and a daughter, Sharon, were born. Joyce and Harold were married for 46 years before Harold’s passing in 1993.

Joyce worked as a nurse until she became a mother. She spent several years raising children, then returned to the field of nursing until she retired.

Joyce leaves behind her daughter, Sharon (Matt) Schafer (Basin, Wyo.), and son, Dale (Shirley) Kogel (Pierre, S.D.), and daughter-in-law, Kim (Redding, Calif.), along with seven grandchildren, Timothy (Crystal) DeHo (Casper, Wyo.), Rebecca Myers (Greybull, Wyo.), Ashley (Darin) Smith (Ranchester, Wyo.), Sarah (Martez) McGill (Spokane, Wash.), Kristi (Jason) Berndt (Kogel) (Pierre, S.D.), Adam Kogel (Rapid City, S.D.), and Jayme Kogel (San Francisco); and 15 great grandchildren: Alakai, Mattix, and Rohan Myers, Imani McGill, Taylor, Seth, and Mak Mena, Faith, Hope, and Braiden Martineau, Dre’ Berndt, Landon and Khloe Kogel, and Sierra Renner and Payne Feldman.

Joyce is preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Laura; her husband, Harold; her son, Jim; her grandson, Joshua Kogel, and great grandson, Bailey Kogel. 

Joyce will always be remembered for her talents in crocheting, knitting, and sewing. Joyce spent her time creating beautiful crafts for her home and to gift to her family and friends. Joyce also had a knack for gardening. She spent many hours tending to her garden and enjoying the fruits of her labor. Most of all, Joyce will be remembered for her cooking and tending to the needs of others.

Joyce will be greatly missed by her loved ones.

Funeral Mass services will be held on Dec. 11, 2025, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greybull, Wyo.
