Judy Louise Emmett
Oct. 22, 1941 - Nov. 6, 2025
Judy Louise Emmett (Rimer), 84, of Basin, Wyo., passed away peacefully surrounded by family and love on Nov. 6, 2025.
Born Oct. 22, 1941, in Greybull, Wyo., Judy was the daughter of Charles Elmer Rimer and Ruby Eugenia Louise Freiling Rimer. At birth, she weighed just 3 1/2 pounds and was lovingly cared for in a shoebox by the wood stove to keep her warm. She spent her early years in Greybull before moving to Casper, where she graduated from high school. Her life was marked by a deep commitment to family, community, and an unwavering passion for cooking and caring for others.
Judy began her professional journey as a telephone operator, following in the footsteps of her three older sisters. She later moved back to Greybull and continued her work with Mountain Bell. After marrying Gary Jacob Emmett, Judy embraced life on several ranches across Montana and Wyoming. Eventually, the couple settled in Greybull, where Judy discovered her true calling in the kitchen.
Over the years, Judy became a beloved fixture in the local restaurant scene. She worked at numerous establishments including Bluejacket’s (Lisa’s), KOA, Uptown Cafe, Greybull schools, Pizza on the Run, and concluded her culinary career at CC’s Pizza. Her reputation as a gifted cook spread far and wide — so much so that Bob Patterson, owner of the KOA campground, built a restaurant and personally recruited Judy to be his breakfast cook. Wherever Judy cooked, local law enforcement officers were sure to follow-drawn by her legendary cinnamon rolls and lemon meringue pie. Judy’s kitchen was more than a workplace; it was a place of joy and generosity. You never went away hungry. She baked bread and cookies regularly, not for herself or even her children, but to share with others in town. Her children often joked that they never got to enjoy these treats because she had already packed them up to deliver elsewhere.
Beyond her culinary talents, Judy had a creative spirit and an industrious nature. She loved ironing and did so for many people over the years. Her sewing skills were remarkable; she could spend hours crafting intricate Barbie doll clothes and other sewing projects that showcased her meticulous attention to detail.
Judy also had a playful side. She enjoyed playing cards and games with her children and grandchildren. Once the kids went to bed, however, she would take over the Nintendo console to play Mario Brothers — never letting the grandkids have a turn.
She was a proud member of Eastern Stars and Jobs Daughters, organizations that reflected her values of service and community involvement.
Judy is lovingly remembered by her children: Gary (Becky) Emmett, Robert (Sherri) Emmett, Carla Scharen (Mitch Baker), Carrie (Terry) Good, and Darwin (Kim) Emmett; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Gary Jacob Emmett; grandsons Robert Cole Emmett and Dolan Tyrel Scharen; her parents Charles Elmer Rimer and Ruby Eugenia Louise Freiling Rimer; brothers Clarence Elmer Rimer, Robert “Bobby” Dell Rimer, Baby Rimer and Charles Doyle Rimer; and sisters Dorothy Joan Funk, Charlene Marie Collingwood and Jacqueline Lee Pollard.
Judy Louise Emmett leaves behind a legacy of warmth, generosity, humor, and unforgettable meals shared with friends and neighbors. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
A graveside service will be held Nov. 29, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Donald J. Ruhl Memorial Cemetery in Greybull with a luncheon to follow at the Greybull Elks Lodge. Arrangements have been entrusted to Atwood Family Funeral Directors.
