Prescribed pile burning planned in the BNF
Bighorn National Forest Supervisor Andrew Johnson is planning to burn piles in various locations across the forest this coming winter. The piles are built from tree branches and limbs cut during fuels reduction and vegetation management projects. These projects are designed to protect or reduce the risk of losing structures during wildfires and to foster diversity in forested areas.
Piles may be hand or machine built. To inform people, specific pile locations will be posted on Bighorn National Forest social media platforms prior to ignition. The piles may smolder for several days or weeks after ignition and will be monitored by fire specialists. During this time, smoke may be visible in local communities or along highways.
