Werbelow, Burns earn top honors for GHS Class of 2021

Matthew “Matt” Werbelow, son of Julie and Victor Werbelow, and Kaylyn Burns, daughter of Dan and Michelle Burns, have been named valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, of this year’s graduating class at Greybull High School.

Matt said being the top grad of his class has always been his goal. He has worked hard to achieve that goal, but at the same time has been active in a host of activities during his four years in high school.  He has been involved in soccer, basketball, football, choir, band, Science Fair, and Performance Piano.

He taps Joel Kuper as his favorite teacher saying, “He was very helpful on my research project and is very knowledgeable about everything science related and was extremely understanding.”

Matt plans on attending the University of Wyoming to pursue a major in the medical field.

His advice to underclassman is: “If there was ever a time to try something, it’s now!”

Kaylyn has been involved in volleyball, basketball, track and field, Student Council, Future Business Leaders of America and is on the National Honor Society.

Mark Sanford has been one of her favorite teachers. Kaylyn said, “Throughout high school he has not only been a teacher, but I also view him as a second dad. He’s always there to talk to and has given me great advice that I will use in my life after high school.”

She admits that being an honor grad has always been her goal. “My grades are very important to me and I did my best during the few first years of high school to set myself up to be at the top of my class. I was shooting for valedictorian,” she confessed, “but I’m proud of the work I put in to be the salutatorian.”

She would like to tell students just entering high school to “enjoy every second of high school you can. It seems like it’s going to last forever but before you know it, you’ll be graduating.”

She knows that is true because, “these last four years have gone by way faster than I anticipated and I wish I would’ve enjoyed those earlier years more.”

Kaylyn’s future plans are to attend college and major in either pre-PA (Physician Assistant) or pre-nursing.
