100 Years Ago

Sept 26, 1924

Owen Sweeney, rural mail carrier, was accidentally shot last Sunday noon at his home just south of town and expired at the Basin hospital Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock.  Owen took the magazine out of the .25 Colt automatic pistol which had been used, but one cartridge was evidently left in, and laid the gun on the table.

In an accident which happened at the Colter beet dump yesterday afternoon, Fred Burgess, a brother of A. C. Burgess of Medicine Lodge, was killed instantly.  It is understood that the wagon was not chained when it was driven onto the dump and that when it went over, Burgess was caught between the wagon and the pit.

Sept. 27, 1934

William Willers, 62 and one of the pioneer residents of Greybull, died at his home early Sunday morning from fatal injuries suffered when he fell from the roof of a house he was repairing Saturday afternoon.

A large and enthusiastic group of Lions attended the meeting Tuesday evening.  Coaches Quigg and McGaughey and the Rev. S. K. Markley were guests and stimulating talks were given by them.

The skies cleared today and a warm sun vaulted the temperature after a 3-inch snowstorm and freezing weather earlier in the week.  There is promise today of several weeks of fine autumn weather.

Sept. 28, 1944

Jay F. McGuffey has been promoted to staff sergeant, according to his mother, Anna E. McGuffey.  Jay attended Greybull schools and graduated from Greybull High School.

Raymond Bristow, son of Mabel Bristow, is now recovering rapidly at St. Luke’s.  Following an operation for a ruptured appendix, there was little hope for his recovery.  A second operation was necessary and since then his condition has improved rapidly.

In the second game of the 1944 season, the Greybull Buffs will play the Basin Bobcats on the Greybull field tomorrow afternoon.  Football is being revived at Basin High School this year after discontinuing this sport two years ago.

Sept. 23, 1954

Attorney S. W. Davis and Dr. A. S. Rogers are erecting a new building on the Davis property across the street from the post office.

The Oklahoma-Wyoming game, which Oklahoma won 14-6 at Laramie Saturday, featured two Wyoming potential stars, sophomore Jim Crawford and Jerry Lester.  Crawford, a Greybull native, was the Pokes’ top ground gainer.

Sept. 24, 1964

Homecoming Queen Kathleen Pavus was crowned by co-captain Terry Twomey at the dance after the football game. Her court included Jody Michelena, Janet Williams, Karen Whaley and Janet Stoddard.

50 Years Ago

Sept. 25, 1964

The same bus that broke down bringing the football team home from Tongue River last week had trouble again, despite having been sent to Billings to get fixed.  The Greybull football team travelled to Jackson for a Friday night football game and Saturday morning before departing Jackson, bus driver Archie Crichton made the demoralizing discovery that, once again, the bus had no brakes.  The Jackson school district loaned Greybull a bus so they could return home late Saturday.

Police in Greybull are seeking the identity of a boy, estimated to be about 8 to 10 years old, who was having a field day Monday beating up smaller kids.
