60 Years Ago: Car smashes into telephone company building in Basin

Nov. 21, 1924

The many friends of Miss Nellie McMillan are pleased to note that she has won the state championship as the best home-making club girl and will attend the National Stock Show at Chicago with all expenses paid.  She attended the Greybull schools until moving to Basin two years ago.  

The worst auto accident that has happened on the Shell road occurred Wednesday night, probably around 10 o’clock, when Marvin, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Collingwood, was instantly killed by the Ford car he was driving leaving the high fill at the Frank Reeves place and going down the embankment on top of him.

Nov 22, 1934

Remember there is a harvest home dance at Shell Community Hall Saturday night, Nov. 24. A good time is expected by all.  The Mountaineers will make the music. 

The Greybull Athletic Club, under the sponsorship of Walter Smith and Pete Peterson, is planning a table tennis tournament in the future. Other activities to be enjoyed this winter are basketball, boxing, wrestling and weightlifting contests.

Nov. 23, 1944

Mr. and Mrs. Logan C. Hoover found two pictures of their son in the Prisoner of War bulletin, sent to them each month by the Red Cross.  Their son, Second Lieutenant Chester L. Hoover, has been a prisoner of war for the past 18 months. He was a bombardier on a B-17.

Nov 25, 1954

The new bridge over the Greybull River is now handling traffic and the old bridge is practically dismantled.  

Work has commenced this week on the former Engle building at the corner of Greybull Avenue and Sixth Street, which formerly housed the Mefferd Jewelry and Flower Center.  It was recently purchased by A. L. Probst.

60 years ago

Nov 26, 1964

A bigger crowd than was expected drove up to see the new Fun Valley slope and completely depleted the free barbecue beef lunch.  Almost 300 lunches were served and those arriving after 3 p.m. went hungry.

About $350 damage was inflicted on the Mountain State Telephone and Telegraph garage in Basin early Thursday morning when a car driven by Justice of the Peace Alvin Triplett of Basin hit the building.

Nov. 21, 1974

William H. Lassiter, 25, a native of Greybull, is a new member of the Greybull Police Department.

The Greybull High School Drama Club will present a stage adaptation of “Pillow Talk” tonight and Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Greybull High School auditorium.

Dr. Marie Larson, GHS grad and daughter of Elmer and Grace Larson of Greybull, returned home from East Africa after attending a meeting of the Society of International Veterinarians symposia and went on a camera safari of Kenya and Tanzania.
