60 Years Ago: Firefighters summoned to blaze at refinery site

Dec. 7, 1923

The second trial of Dr. W.S. Bennett, former physician of Park County and later of Greybull, has been set for Monday in the  federal court in Cheyenne. The jury in the first trial failed to agree. Bennett is charged with violation of the Mann, or white slavery, law.
Wm. Ranta and Miss Edith Rule and Roy Rooth and Miss Bessie Morrison were married on Thursday in Worland. Rev. Geo. E. Hutt officiated.  Following the ceremony the young folks left for Lovell and Billings, returning here Sunday, where they were given the popular rice shower welcome.

Dec. 7, 1933

Thirty-six men will go to work in the morning on an extensive street graveling program with funds made available from the recently-installed  Civil Works Act inaugurated by President Roosevelt a few days ago in an effort to place 4,000,000 men to work over the nation.
The county agent and home demonstrator contracts were renewed for another year on the basis of the past year by action of the county commissioners today.  The county commissioners assumed the attitude that they would abide by the wishes of the greatest number of people in the county.

Dec. 2, 1943

A night school for the repairing of farm machinery is now being conducted by the agriculture department of the Greybull High School. The class meets Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7 to 10 p.m. The purpose of the class is to help farmers get their machinery repaired and ready for next spring and summer’s work.
In a letter to the Greybull Club this week, the Big Horn Airways of Sheridan announced that it had two airplanes  available for emergencies. One plane will cruise at 175 miles an hour and the other at 100 miles per hour. In an emergency, these planes can be arranged for transport by telephone.

Dec. 3. 1953

Christmas season will officially open Saturday. The parade starts at the Community Hall at 2:30. A huge crowd is expected.
Two Greybull brothers were married on the same day this week  but were more than 6,000 miles apart.  Sgt. Joseph J. Terry was united in marriage to Christiane Fontelle by the mayor at Saint-Ay, France while Thomas A. Terry was married to Karen Deveraux  of Hyattville in Greybull Monday. They are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Terry of Greybull.

Dec. 5, 1963

A gasoline fire at Gordon Refinery Saturday night destroyed part of the equipment and facilities at the refinery but Greybull firemen, aided by dry chemical from Marathon Pipeline, were able to put the fire out.
Ten new directors have been elected to the Greybull Chamber of Commerce. They are Chris Paustian, Skip Schuyler, Tom Hubbard, Jack Kinghorn,  Jim Haycock, Bill Brooks, Jack Kvale, Jack Linderman, Lee Kunkle and Leigh Sherman.

Dec. 6, 1973

Two Greybull policemen, Chief Elvin Saul and patrolman Don, have handed in their resignations to the Greybull Town Council and will be leaving the force in the middle of this month.
A new scoreboard has been installed at the west end of the GHS gym. The major portion of the scoreboard cost was paid through he Larry Shepard memorial fund. The fund was established at First National Bank following Larry’s death in an automobile accident in 1972. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Shepard of Greybull.
