Big Horse Point S opens in former Co-op tire shop
The Potter family has moved into Big Horn Co-op’s old tire shop in Greybull with hopes of pumping up the auto services available to the Basin.
Adam and Rain Potter of Basin started renting the space about a month and a half ago to house Big Horse Point S Tire and Auto, a new business for them, branching off of Big Horse Towing.
“The opportunity presented itself, and I felt there was a need in this community for another tire shop,” Adam said.
Adam, originally from northern Utah, has been doing mechanical work since he was 12 years old, picking up a job in the oil field when he was 27. He has run five fracking crews across the globe: in North Dakota, New Mexico, Saudia Arabia and Argentina. When Rain was offered a nurse practitioner position at Three Rivers Health between Basin and Greybull in 2020, the family made the move.
“We were looking for a way to get him out of the oil field…” Rain said.
“SHE was looking for a way to get me out of the oil field,” Adam interjected.
The Potters started Big Horse Towing in Basin about a year ago, but it wasn’t quite enough to leave the oil field.
“We actually fasted and prayed about it, what direction we needed to go in….” Rain said. “The very next day after we as a family fasted and prayed for help with this, [Adam] got a phone call from Brett Koehn, the realtor, he’s our neighbor.”
Koehn told Adam that the Co-op was looking to rent out its tire shop, and the Potters jumped at the opportunity. The family, including daughter McKenzie and son Levi, who attend Greybull schools, and daughter Jorden at Basin, has all pitched in to help.
“Our 17-year-old daughter [McKenzie] has gotten pretty good at busting tires,” Rain said. “Our son is an oil changing wizard at this point. It’s really cool; it’s the whole family working together.” Rain has Tuesdays off from the hospital and spends them down at the shop helping with paperwork.
Also hired on is Kyle Peterson, a veteran Stryker mechanic for the army.
“We know what we’re doing,” Adam said.
Big Horse Point S offers tire services, oil changes, alignments, front-end work, batteries, and specializes in “the dirty parts of the car.” Adding on to the services previously offered by the Co-op, Big Horse also provides its towing service and is working toward offering a mobile mechanic service. In the future, they hope to add on commercial tire services.
“By the end of the summer anything to do with rubber we should be able to handle,” Adam said.
The shop will prioritize using Valvoline oil and sources its tires mainly from Point S in Salt Lake City. However, they are able to order in tires as quickly as 24 hours from Billings or Casper if need be. They also offer a four-year or 3/32 wear down warranty on all their tires and rotate and patch tires from their shop for free.
As an aside, they also have eggs fresh from their farm available for purchase at the shop for $4 a dozen. Rain said the eggs have been bringing in tire customers, and even a new employee.
“We were looking for a better community, and I think we found it here,” Adam said.
An official grand opening is tentatively scheduled for early May. The Big Horse Point S Tire and Auto shop is available at 307-765-2090. For 24-hour service, call Adam at 307-388-9089. Booking is also available online at www.pointstire.com/greybull/about-point-s/.
