On June 28, 1943, a B-17F Flying Fortress was headed from Oregon to Nebraska with the ultimate goal of flying to Great Britain to participate in the bombing of Nazi Germany in World War II. On its way, the U.S. aircraft went off course and ended up crashing near the crest of what is known today as Bomber Mountain in Cloud Peak Wilderness Area. Ten men died in the incident, honored by a placard at the site.
