Buffs emerge from holidays with busy weekend of action
Counting Friday night contests in Pavillion, the Greybull Buffs will have played nine road games before their home opener on Saturday, Jan. 10.
Wyoming Indian will be in town for JV games at noon, followed by the varsity girls at 1:30 p.m. and the varsity boys at 3 p.m. It will be the first of six home dates on this year’s varsity schedule.
The Lady Buffs showed promise in December that belied their 3-5 record for the month.
Heading into the break, they were among the upper echelon of 2A ranks in rebounding and defense but closer to the middle of the pack in scoring (averaging 44.4 points per game) and shooting accuracy (35%).
Perla Rodriguez leads 2A in blocked shots and ranks third in rebounding (9.3 rpg) and sixth in scoring (15.5 ppg).
Teammate Marlee Henson ranks third in steals, averaging 4.3 per game, and seventh in assists, averaging 2.4 per game.
Senior Shayne Cheatham checks in on the 2A leaderboard, ranking as its 10th most accurate 3-point shooter.
The Buffs had an even better month, going 5-3 which ranked among their best Decembers of the past decade. Like the girls, they’ve excelled on the glass and on the defensive end, leading all of 2A in those categories.
To keep the wins coming, they’ll need to improve on the offensive end, where they rank ninth in scoring and eighth in shooting. In both, they trail all three of their conference rivals.
Carter Jacobs ended the month ranking seventh in scoring (15.9 ppg) and eighth in steals at 3.5 per game. Rex Cooper ranked sixth in field-goal percentage and 10th in rebounding.
