Conference meet awaits for GMS thinclads

Greybull Middle School’s track and field athletes competed in their final regular season meet Saturday in Lovell.

The eighth-grade boys again led the way, earning the program’s highest finish in the team standings. The group scored 93 points, trailing only Powell in the 10-team field.

Coach Becky Eichelberger said GMS athletes had an “amazing” day, with 22 PRs and five more earning Best of the Best invitations.  In addition, one new school record was set and two others were improved.

The new Best of the Best qualifiers included Lydia Rios (shot put), Amelia Emmett (100 and 200), Liam Wisehart (triple jump), Triston Gross and Siul Valdez-Rodriguez in the triple jump.

Kaiser Eichelberger set a new sixth-grade record in the 400 meters, running a 1:07.13. The previous record belonged to Dawson McEwan, who ran a 1:08.58 in 2011.

Josey Whaley, meanwhile, broke a record that has stood for more than four decades. Whaley threw 80-4 1/2 in the discus, topping the mark of 75-11 set by Jamie Crawford in 1984. 

Siul Valdez-Rodriguez has set a pair of seventh-grade records this season. He ran a 12.19 in the 100, beating the 12.3 set by Rick Herrin in 1983.  Valdez-Rodriguez also owns the school record in the 200 with a 24-92, bettering the time of Fabian Davila who ran a 26.27 in 2010.

The Buffs will finish the season at the Big Horn Conference meet Saturday in Thermopolis, with the Best of the Best to follow next week in Fremont County.
