Cyclists, supporters, and community members are gearing up for the 14th annual PEAKS to Conga, a cycling event that benefits cancer patients in the Big Horn Basin. This fully supported, non-competitive ride spans 66 miles from Cody to Shell.
The event raises crucial funds for People Everywhere Are Kind and Sharing (PEAKS), a nonprofit that helps cover non-medical expenses for individuals undergoing cancer treatment. Since its inception, the event has raised over $450,000 to assist local patients and their families.
After news broke that the founder and committee who had organized PEAKS to Conga for the past 14 years were ready to retire, a dedicated group of community members stepped up to keep this beloved event going.
Their commitment ensures that the ride will continue supporting local cancer patients across the Big Horn Basin, and that the Peaks to Conga mission and vision are upheld.
About the Ride
The ride kicks off at 7 a.m. on June 21 at the parking lot of Cody Coffee Roasters and Ascension FBO Network (3001 Duggleby Dr, Cody, WY). Participants ride along the Greybull Highway adorned with tribute signs honoring those who have battled or are currently fighting cancer.
The finish line awaits in Shell, where anyone can enjoy the Shellebration. Beginning at noon, enjoy a free sound bath class, followed by a yoga and Pilates session at 1 p.m. From 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., live music will be provided by Jimmy Rush, Dulcet River, and Jane Bell.
Throughout the event, take part in yard games and enjoy food and beverages from the Shell Bar and Shell Store. The ride is fully supported with aid stations, and a support crew that provides mechanical and technical assistance.
EMS and law enforcement are also present to ensure the safety of participants.
Pre-ride details
Riders can collect their swag bags and connect with fellow participants on Friday, June 20, from 4-7 p.m. at Joyvagen Bike Shop (901 12th St., Cody, WY). Registration for the ride is $100 (plus a $7 processing fee); registration is open until midnight on June 20.
Tribute signs, which line the route to honor those affected by cancer or to encourage riders to make it to Shell, can be purchased for $100 (plus a $7 processing fee). Orders for tribute signs must be placed by June 5.
Background
Inspired by a group of motorcycle-riding women, who were raising funds for breast cancer, Laurie Stoelk and a small group of cyclists first rode the 66 miles from Cody to Shell 13 years ago. The event has since grown, attracting riders to support the cause. This annual tradition continues to honor lives touched by cancer while uniting the community in kindness and sharing.
Each year, the event raises $30,000 to $35,000 to help cancer patients across Park, Big Horn, Washakie, and Hot Springs counties to afford essential non-medical expenses.
