Days of ‘49 second stop on summer rodeo circuit
The history of rodeos in the area goes way back, but the summer long competition that ties them all together and incentivizes cowboys and cowgirls to compete for year-end honors is still a relatively new concept.
The Big Horn Basin Rodeo Circuit launched about a decade ago and Greybull’s Days of ‘49 has been a stop on the summer tour since that its very first year.
The latest chapter in this event’s storied history will be written Friday night at the rodeo grounds. Start time is 7 p.m. and in keeping with tradition, it will begin with the crowning of this year’s Days of ‘49 queen and princess.
As for this year’s circuit, the ‘49er rodeo is stop two on a 10-rodeo schedule. It follows closely on the heels of last month’s Cowley Spring Rodeo, where several cowboys and cowgirls got off to nice starts.
With one event in the books, these are your individual event leaders heading into Friday night:
RANCH BRONC: Wyatt Duncan

After this weekend, the circuit spotlight shifts to Lovell and the Mustangs Day rodeo, followed by the Fourth of July rodeo in Ten Sleep, the Pioneer Days rodeo in Cowley, the Washakie and Big Horn county fair rodeos and the Hot Springs Chute-Out in Thermopolis before concluding at the Labor Day rodeo in Meeteetse.
That will set the stage for the circuit finals, to be held in Basin.
Admission to the rodeo is $10 for adults, $5 for kids age 7 to 13 and seniors.
