Eighth-grade boys claim conference championship

Greybull Middle School’s eighth-grade boys repeated as Big Horn Conference champions, racking up 157 points to top the eight-team field assembled Saturday in Thermopolis.

The same group of boys triumphed last year as seventh graders.

This time their victory was fueled by wins in three relay races and individual titles by Siul Valdez-Rodriguez, Cruz Sorenson and Riley Wiggins.

Every member of the team contributed at least a point to the cause, said Coach Becky Eichelberger.

The days other highlights included a new school record by Valdez-Rodriguez, 27 PRs and several new Best of the Best qualifications.  

Valdez-Rodriguez set an eighth-grade record in the 400, running a 55.65.  Jared Collingwood held the previous mark, a 59.97 set in 1999.  Valdez-Rodriguez also improved on two other records he already owns, running a 12:11 in the 100 and a 24.52 in the 200.

The new qualifiers for Best of the Best included:

- Emily Didrickson, long jump; 

- Lyddia Rios, discus;

- Seventh-grade girls 400-meter relay team of Amelia Emmett, Lyddia Rios, Julie Garcia, and Josey Whaley;

- Eighth-grade boys 400-meter relay team of Triston Gross, Riley Wiggins, Cody Myers, and Siul Valdez-Rodriguez; 

- Eighth grade boys sprint medley relay team of Angelo Aguilar, Cody Myers, Jace Julson and Baron Eichelberger, and

- Eighth grade boys 1,600-meter relay team of Triston Gross, Liam Wisehart, Cruz Sorenson and Baron Eichelberger.

Summing up the meet, Eichelberger said, “It was a rewarding season watching our team continue to work on their skills.  This allowed them to have the final push of success at conference.”
