Greybull Middle School’s eighth-grade team is one win away from an unbeaten season.

The Buffs improved to 6-0 Monday night with a 37-6 rout of Rocky Mountain in Cowley. It was their second win of the season over the Grizzlies; the first came in the Sept. 7 season opener for both teams.

Greybull scored on its first two possessions to take a 16-0 lead, but the Grizzlies clawed their way back into it, scoring on a quarterback run that covered 60 years.

That made it 16-6.

Rocky was on the march again with about four minutes remaining in the first half when Quin Coyne intercepted a pass to stop the drive.

Coach Logan Burningham called it the “pivotal point in the game,” as the Buffs proceeded to drive 60 yards for their third touchdown to move in front 24-6.

“In second half our defense pitched a shutout and we scored two more times with a point after touchdown by Tell Edeler, his second on the year,” said Burningham.

Shoshoni is all that’s standing between the Buffs and an unbeaten season.  The two teams will play Saturday at 9 a.m. on the Greybull turf.

The younger Greybull team struggled in Cowley, losing 40-6.

“It was a very long night for the second group,” said Burningham, lamenting its inability to prevent big plays that could have turned the tables in the first half.

“All could have been stopped as we were in position to make the plays on most of them,” he said. “Rocky had two 40-plus yard runs that we had them in the backfield for losses that they broke loose from and also two big touchdown passes on third-and-longs.

The score was 24-6 at the half and the Grizzlies cruised from there.

The sixth and seventh graders will also finish the season on Saturday, with their game kicking off at 10:30 a.m.
