Freshmen provide spark for JV Buffs
Like the varsity, the Greybull Buff JV had an encouraging opening weekend, going 2-1 at the Coal Miner’s Classic in Wright and the Herder Classic in Glenrock.
Coach James Armel deployed three juniors, two sophomores and eight freshmen. The juniors and sophomores were swing players who logged just two quarters per outing.
The Buffs defeated Wright 68-21 in their opener. Balanced scoring keyed the win, with William Harlow, Jordi Araiza and Quin Coyne each netting 10 and Briston Craft eight.
Briston Craft sparked the Buffs in their 53-37 win over Sundance, leading in points with 14, assists with five and steals with six. Alan Burgos chipped in nine points and William Harlow eight.
The Buffs closed out the weekend with a 53-47 overtime loss to Glenrock. Coyne was the only double-digit scorer with 14. Anthony Chacon and Briston Craft added eight and seven, respectively.
Briston Craft and Landen Craft led on the boards with seven and six caroms, respectively.
“We have been working on being aggressive and looking for their chances when they are in our offense,” said Coach James Armel. “The players have shown a good eye for creating space and getting their shots off. On defense, we have been working on pressuring opposing teams and creating more opportunities for ourselves. The team did a good job of creating steals and finding fastbreak chances.
“Bright spots on the team were Briston Craft and Quin Coyne, who both showed they were ready to handle the physicality of playing against older teams. William Harlow and Jordi Araiza did a good job of anchoring our offense and defense by finishing inside and rebounding well.”
