G-R notches four weight class wins at tourney

Greybull-Riverside wrestlers competed on their home mats three times in the past week, hosting their annual tournament on Saturday between triangulars in Greybull Thursday and in Basin Tuesday.

The middle schoolers faced their strongest competition at the tournament, which attracted teams from Riverton, Thermopolis, Worland and Rocky Mountain.

Maythe Garay and Harper Juneau turned in the best performances of the day for G-R, as each of them won all three of their matches by pin en route to wins at 124-130 and 135-146, respectively.

“Maythe has wrestled for several years and the fact that they are workout partners in the room helps because they push each other to get better,” said Coach Mark Sanford.  “Maythe has helped Harper learn ... and Harper is a pretty quick study on the map.”

Braxten Link, 3-0 with two pins and a tech fall, won the 78-81 B division and Delta Craft, 2-0 with a pair of decisions, took top honors in the 93-96 girls division.  Sanford said Link responded well to moving out of the A division and that Craft has some things to clean up but is showing steady improvement.

Sanford added, “Colby (Thacker) had another good day, (Riley) Wiggins ran into some stuff but hopefully he learns from it and Liam (Wisehart) was at a really hard weight.  I don’t want him to discouraged; he was just hitting kids who are a little more experienced.

“Overall, our effort is moving in the right direction,” he continued. “I talk about not making the same mistakes week after week, cleaning that up.  There’s a lot more I want to teach them, but I’m afraid to until I know they have gotten down the stuff we’ve taught them so far.”

The point of Thursday’s triangular with Rocky Mountain and Lovell was to get kids matches, not to determine county supremacy which is how the annual gathering of the three teams is touted at the high school level. No team scores were kept and every wrestler got at least one match and some as many as two.  Sanford said he saw some good things but lamented a few matches his athletes gave away due to poor positioning. 

G-R competes in Lander this weekend.

A DIVISION — Quaide Houchin went 0-3, placed fourth at 98; Liam Wisehart went 0-3, placed fourth at 115; Riley Wiggins went 3-1, placed second at 126.

B DIVISION — Kayson Nyberg went 1-2, placed third at 72-76, Marshall Brown went 2-1, placed fourth at 72-76; Braxten Link went 3-0, placed first at 79-81; Jayden Winkler went 0-3, placed fourth at 95-98; Jason Torres went 0-3, placed fourth at 103-110; Haaken Craft went 2-1, placed third at 106-111; Colby Thacker went 2-1, placed second at 106-111; Noah Blakley went 2-1, placed second at 114-118; Hunter Craft placed went 1-2, placed third at 137-145; Jack Winkler went 0-4, placed fifth at 153-161.
