GMS deploys four boys basketball teams

Greybull Middle School is fielding A, B, C and D teams this season to provide adequate playing time for the 43 players on its boys basketball roster.

All four squads were in action last weekend, hosting Thermopolis Friday and playing in Burlington Saturday.  At each location, the young Buffs won one and lost two.

Against Thermopolis, the A team lost 50-5, unable to overcome a rash of turnovers that that led to easy baskets for the Bobcats.

The B team got off to a slow start and trailed 13-2 after one, but settled in and closed the gap the rest of the event, eventually losing by four, 30-26.

The C team saved the day for GMS, pulling out a 26-25 win.  They trailed the entire way before Nash Thiel hit a layup on an out-of-bounds play with about 1:30 to play.

In Burlington, the A team lost 46-6.  “We looked a little smoother ... just couldn’t get the ball to drop in the hoop,” said Coach Tate Carney.

The B team notched Greybull’s only win, 23-22.  Carney said key plays were provided by Dietrich Otto, who had “a big rebound with four Burlington players around him” and the duo of Korbin Stewart and Kade Julson, who “had two pick-and-roll players in the final two minutes to give us the lead.”

The D team lost 38-0, but Carney noted that it was “the first game of basketball ever for some of these kids,” and that they “grew so much” and “got much more aggressive” as the game progressed.
