GMS eighth-grade boys win at Rocky

Greybull Middle School’s track and field team heads into the final meet of the regular season Saturday in Lovell with seven Best of the Best qualifiers and several others within reach of the standards themselves.

The young Buffs had back-to-back outings last week, competing at Friday’s Rocky Mountain Invitational before hosting their annual meet Saturday.  It had been set for earlier in the month, but was postponed due to the threat of inclement weather.

Reagan Vigil provided one of the highlights for the Buffs, setting a new school eighth-grade record in the 100-meter hurdles.  The 18.96 that she ran on her home track bettered the mark of 19.14 held by Ashlyn Chacon. Coach Becky Eichelberger said, “Breaking the record has been one of her goals all season,” adding, “She has worked hard on her starts and speed.”

The team’s Best of the Best qualifiers to date include Ella Keisel in the discus, Siul Valdez-Rodriguez in the 100 and the 200, Riley Wiggins in the 200, Cody Myers in the high jump, Cruz Sorenson in the shot put and discus and Triston Gross in the high jump.

“With two meets remaining and one of them being our conference meet, we are really focusing on where everyone’s marks are and what they need to do to get to be one of the top placers for a higher team finish at conference or a qualifying mark,” said Eichelberger. 

“As a sixth grader, Kru Keisel will add points in the throwing events while Kaiser Eichelberger will give some team points in the mid-distance for the seventh grade boys team points.  On the girls side, sixth grader Emily Didrickson is likely to add points in the throws and long jump, while Paisley Link has potential to add some from the 100-meter hurdles.  Josey Whaley has already qualified for the Best of the Best and continues to be a top contender at each meet in the throws, while Lydia Rios is right behind her to add a few team points.  Amelia Emmett has shown so much growth in the 100-meter hurdles and the 200, that will contribute to the team standings and a trip to the Best of the Best.  

“As an eighth-grade team, the girls have been standing their own with only four girls competing.  Joey Boyer is strong in the 100-meter dash, Reagan in the hurdles, and Ella Keisel and Wendy Garcia have the throws covered.  On the boys side, there is a little more versatility with the events we can place them in.  Now it is just deciding which events each will place in that will give us the most team points for a conference championship.”
