GMS teams split with Ten Sleep
The third week of September offered a respite from the rigors of the middle school volleyball schedule, with just a single match against Ten Sleep on Friday on the slate for Greybull’s seventh- and eighth-grade teams.
The teams split the contests. Ten Sleep won the A game, 18-25, 25-20, 15-12 while Greybull took the B game, 25-13, 25-21, 15-7.
Sean Patrick, coach of the A team consisting primarily of eighth graders, said a run of six straight serves by Josie Collingwood sparked his team to the first-set win, but in sets two and three, the serving and serve receive went south.’
“We couldn’t find our groove,” he said, but added, “I thought our girls did well, despite the fact that we had errors throughout the match. I’m not sure what we need to work on, but we will definitely be working hard to make up for what we were lacking.”
Seventh grade coach Chelsea Craw, meanwhile, said her girls “really showed they can play like a team,” beginning and ending the match with excitement and energy.
In the first set, the team managed eight aces. Amelia Emmett had the longest run of serves — seven good ones in a row. Maythe Garay started the second set with five good serves, three of them aces. Ten Sleep caught up near the end, but the girls stayed in it and pulled out the win. The third set ended quickly with Greybull’s first four servers totaling nine aces.
“It’s safe to say their ability to serve is improving, and it has been really exciting to see them get the ball set up to hit,” said Craw.
This week’s schedule features a tripleheader against Rocky Mountain today (Thursday, Sept. 26), with matches at 4:15, 5:15 and 6:15 p.m. The girls go to Wind River on Friday for matches at 3 and 4 p.m. before returning home for Saturday matches against Meeteetse at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon.
