GMS thinclads show potential at season opener

Coach Rebekka Eichelberger is expecting “another great year of track and field” for Greybull Middle School athletes.

“We are very optimistic about what the team could achieve this year,” she said, adding, “We have most areas of the events filled with athletes that will place high in every meet, as well as make it to the Best of the Best meet that wraps up the season.”

The team’s potential was on display at its first meet of the season Saturday in Burlington.

Several athletes won individual events, including Reagan Vigil and Ella Keisel in the seventh-grade girls division, Josey Whaley in the seventh-grade girls, and Riley Wiggins and Triston Gross in the eighth-grade boys.

Eichelberger called the meet “a great start to the season” and while she doesn’t know what the Best of the Best qualifying standards will be, some members of the team may have already bettered them.

This year’s roster consists of 14 eighth graders, nine seventh graders and 16 sixth graders, for a total of 39 plus three managers.

“For the sixth grade class coming in, the first meet has quite a few learning curves, and they are competing with seventh graders so it can be a bit overwhelming,” said Eichelberger. “Getting this first meet under their belts gives them a baseline of where they are and what they have to focus on as we move through the season.”

The team’s annual home meet, scheduled for Friday, has been postponed due to weather concerns. It will be made up April 26.
