GMS track teams capture team titles in Burlington

With a strong tailwind at their backs and a malfunctioning timing system, local athletes produced some truly eye-popping stats at Friday’s Burlington Invitational.
Coach Becky Eichelberger put less stock in the numbers that the timing system produced than the individual and team finishes of her athletes.
And on that count, it was a very successful day for GMS.
The following athletes qualified for next week’s Best of the Best competition in Lander:
• Alan Burgos, in the 200 meters
• Jayden Marchant, in the long jump
• William Harlow and Elijah Rice, in the discus
• Triston Gross, in the 100-meter hurdles
• Reagan Vigil, in the 100-meter hurdles
• Lovely Araiza, in the 100 meters.
GMS also fared well as a team, with the eighth-grade girls and the sixth- and seventh-grade boys topping their divisions, which included Rocky Mountain, Meeteetse, Burlington, Riverside and Ten Sleep.
Individual event winners for GMS included Addison Coscarelli (200 meters), Caitlyn Hunt (100-meter hurdles and triple jump), Aaron Corral (200 meters), Elijah Rice (discus), Alan Burgos (seventh 100 and 200), Cruz Sorenson (seventh shot, discus and 400), Liam Wisehart (seventh 200-meter hurdles) and Baron Eichelberger (seventh long jump).
The season wraps up in the coming days with the annual Big Horn Conference meet Saturday at Rocky Mountain, followed by Tuesday’s Best of the Best.
While track is considered an individual sport, Eichelberger has preached the team concept all season and it will come into play this weekend.
“We’d love to be able to bring home some hardware,” she said.
Both seventh-grade teams “have a good shot” of winning their divisions.  “We’ve been in first place at a number of meets, and when we haven’t, we’ve trailed bigger schools that we won’t see (in Cowley),” she said.
The eighth grade teams may not have the depth to make a run at a team title. “The girls could go either way, depending on their performances and how they step up to that conference meet pressure,” she said. “Most of them have already made it to Best of the Best.”
