Henson becomes GHS’s first four-event qualifier
Sophomore Marlee Henson bettered the 2A standard in the 400 meters Friday in Lovell, becoming Greybull High School’s first athlete to qualify for state competition in four different events.
Henson crossed the line in 1:03.13, which was good for second place behind Tongue River’s Afton Cummins, who ran a 1:01.11. Both girls PR’d in the event, with Henson doing so by more than a second and Cummins by more than three.
The meet attracted approximately 10 teams, with the Powell girls and the Lovell boys prevailing in the team competition. The Buffs placed seventh in the boys division and ninth in the girls division.
Henson had previously qualified for state in the 100 meters and as a member of the 400-meter and sprint medley relay team. Coach Nolan Tracy said Henson is struggling with a leg injury that has kept her out of the triple jump.
“She’s long jumping now — but doing so off the opposite foot. She’s still trying to figure that out. It wouldn’t surprise me if she qualified at that too. I thought she would (in Lovell), but didn’t. She’s pretty close.”
In other results from Lovell, Wyatt Whaley set a PR in the discus, throwing 103 feet, 10 inches and placing third. Prior to that, her best had been a 103-2.
Freshman Adeline Kunkel PRd in the two events, clocking a 1:05.66 which was good for seventh in the 400 and a 28.73 to secure 10th in the 200.
On the boys side, Isaac Vigil, Shawn August, Xavier VanderPloeg and Nikoah Sorensen supplied most of the points, wining the 3,200-meter relay.
“It was their first time running it this year,” said Tracy, adding that the boys might try the 1,600-meter relay as well in their bid to qualify for the state meet.
The Buffs placed in both the boys and girls 400-meter relay, in each case, doing so with a new runner in the mix.
With Angela Myers battling injuries, Addison Coscarelli teamed up with mainstays Caitlyn Hunt, Ellie Holloway and Henson to run a 53.8, good for fourth. That time was slightly faster than the 54.08 the team posted with Myers.
In the boys 400-meter relay, Anthony Chacon replaced Carter Peasley on the lead leg. With Daniel Baker, Caiden Sorenson and Jesse Brown taking the baton the rest of the way, the Buffs took sixth, finishing in 47.36 seconds.
The Buffs’ best time of the year is a 47.1, which was recorded by Peasley, Baker, Chacon and Jesse Brown.
“We’ve got three different versions for the boys and two for the girls, which would help in case of a late injury,” said Tracy.
The Buffs will travel to Thermopolis Friday for their final regular season meet of the season.
