Hooray! Just two weeks to go!

They say time flies when you’re having fun. Well, I don’t know how many folks have been having fun for the past year — but time hasn’t flown. In fact, sometimes it seems like it has crept by.

But the end is in sight. Whatever end that is will leave half of the voting public on Cloud 9 and the other half proclaiming that the world, as we know it, is dead.

Will peace reign? No chance. We are a country divided — and you know the truism, “A country divided cannot stand.” Hopefully, we’ll be an exception to the rule.

I think of the trillions and trillions of dollars that have gone into the campaigns. It has been a constant flow. All you hear is how much one party has spent, and how the other party doesn’t have the funds necessary to carry on the last mile to the finish.

Think what could have been accomplished if those trillions of campaign dollars could have been spent on the citizens of our country. What wonderful acts could have been accomplished to help the hungry and the homeless, fix our highways and byways that are in dire need, help our veterans who are sleeping on the streets, provide more police officers — retirements far out-number recruitments — and address rural health care needs.  There is no end to the use, good use, that the presidential campaign funds could be used for.

What were elections and the aforementioned campaigns like prior to TV? I was too young to pay much attention in those days; more interested in how soon a campaign speech would get over so I could listen to the “Hit Parade.”

People were not as critical as to who looked “presidential” and who did not. Or I think that is the way my elders thought back then.

Thank goodness for football games and baseball games. We don’t have to be held hostage to 24-hour recaps of all the lies the OTHER side tells constantly or what the other OTHER side keeps reminding us of.

And a last thought. Perhaps instead of singing the National Anthem before all occasions, we should be repeating the Pledge of Allegiance. You know, “one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” Certainly words we can live by.
