Intramural football team goes 3-0 in opening week
The opening week of action couldn’t have gone much better than it did for Greybull’s intramural football program.
The Little Buffs, as they’ve come to be known, notched three big wins, as the fifth graders stomped Burlington 42-0 and followed that up with a 20-0 win over Rocky Mountain on Saturday while the third and fourth graders knocked off a team from Worland 12-6.
Coach Chris Dalin described it as “a great weekend” for the program, which is put together every year by the Greybull Recreation District.
Burlington is the new kid on the block this year, having just formed its own intramural rec football team. Greybull turned in a dominant performance. Jesse Craft and Gatlin Mulley had interceptions — Mulley returned his for a touchdown — while Jonathan Williams recorded a safety and Parker Callier forced a fumble that Daniel Stamstad returned for a touchdown.
Kingston Schedler had a 50-yard kick return for a touchdown, Alex Chacon and Jayden Waddell had rushing touchdowns of 15 and 20 yards, respectively, and Carston Paxton had a 5-yard receiving touchdown as well.
Against the Grizzlies, the Little Buffs got an onside kick recovery by Alex Chacon, fumble recoveries by Williams, Callier and Schedler, and multiple tackles from Weston Harrison, Alex Chacon, Gael Atilano, Carston Paxton and Callier.
Jesse Craft and Carston Paxton connected on a touchdown pass, Williams scored on a 1-yard plunge and Schedler raced 40 yards for another score.
Defense was the name of the game in the third and fourth graders’ matchup with Worland on Saturday. Neither team scored until the fourth quarter, with Greybull’s points coming on a 35-yard run by Michael Vigil.
Overtime rules gives each team a chance to score from the 25-yard line. Greybull won the coin toss and scored with Lane Collingwood driving in from 4 yards out. Worland then had an opportunity, but the Buffs stood their ground and won, 12-6.
Collingwood had eight solo and eight assisted tackles. Beckett Bassett was right behind with six solos and four assists; Hank Emmett had two of each.
