A group of Iowa teenagers who came to Wyoming in pursuit of adventure instead learned a hard lesson when they were forced to abandon their ascent of Cloud Peak and spend a night in the Big Horn Mountains.
Sheriff Ken Blackburn said the teens, who ranged in age from 15 to 18, didn’t pack enough food or clothing and ran out of water within two hours of beginning their climb.
The highest peak in the Big Horns, Cloud Peak rises to more than 13,000 feet in elevation. “I don’t know how close they got to the summit, but they started back down and in the process of doing so, got separated,” said Blackburn.
The story ended positively, with all six being hoisted out to safety by rescuers and none appearing to require medical care beyond what they received on site.
“They were very lucky,” said Blackburn, crediting the members of Big Horn County Search & Rescue and the Wyoming National Guard for their heroic efforts.
