Lady Buff netters continue to rack up wins
It was another great week for the Greybull Lady Buff varsity volleyball team. In the annual pink game with the Riverside Rebels Oct. 1 in Basin, Greybull held off their counterparts in three exciting sets, 25-22, 26-24, 32-30, and topped homecoming week with a hard-fought conference victory over Shoshoni Friday 26-24, 25-18, 25-20.
“We did have a good weekend and it was in conjunction with homecoming, which can be a bit daunting as the athletes are stretched pretty thin enjoying all of the activities,” said Coach Sara Schlattmann.
The pink game drew a large, boisterous crowd of fans from both teams. The gym was filled with pink-clad fans and the match was exciting to watch.
“There was a great crowd from both schools and the atmosphere was fantastic, especially in the last set (32-30),” said Schlattmann. “The last set wasn’t the prettiest match, but the girls just kept pushing and I am so proud of them for that.”
Wyatt Whaley (33 assists) did a great job of spreading out the offense. Perla Rodriguez led with 10 kills, followed by Aleksey McColloch with nine, Marlee Henson with nine, Camila Acuna with five and Ellie Holloway with two. Holloway, according to her coach, had a big blocking night.
The Buffs were 91% from the line as a team. Leading the way were Shayne Cheatham and Rodriguez, both serving 94%.
Defensively, Fatima Chavez had 12 digs and Julie Lopez, seven.
“It was a nailbiter for sure, but again, I couldn’t be more proud of this team’s resilience,” said Schlattmann.
In the Shoshoni match, McColloch, Rodriguez, Lopez and Cheatham hit 100% of their serves; Cheatham and Rodriguez mixed in two aces.
Defensively, Chavez and Whaley had 15 and 11 digs, respectively.
“But the whole team just really played tough defense as the match got going,” Schlattmann said.
Rodriguez led the attack with seven kills, McColloch added seven, Henson four and Holloway three.
Whaley had 22 assists to go along with her 11 digs.
McColloch and Holloway “had a big night at the net” with five blocks and four blocks respectively, according to their coach. “We started a little slow, but the girls rallied and just played a great match and finished strong. We are now 3-0 in the conference, which is a nice start for us.”
Upcoming
The Lady Buffs will play Burlington today with matches at 4 and 5 p.m. The contest was added to Greybull’s schedule when conflicts forced the cancellation of matches with Big Horn and Wind River.
Meanwhile, a makeup date has been announced for the match with Tongue River that had to be cancelled due to the fires burning in the Big Horn Mountains. If possible, the two teams will try to play on Oct. 24.
