Lady Buffs split weekend games
The Greybull Lady Buffs split their first homestand of the season, losing to Wyoming Indian 66-28 on Friday night before bouncing back to trounce St. Stephens by a nearly identical score of 66-26 on Saturday afternoon.
The two outcomes left the Buffs with a 2-8 record which they will take into this weekend’s Big Horn Basin Classic hosted by Rocky Mountain and Powell high schools.
Wyoming Indian entered Friday’s game as the No. 2 ranked team in 2A, but the Lady Buffs showed up for a battle — just as they did at the Foothills Classic where the Lady Chiefs’ margin of victory was just five points, 51-46.
After a spirited opening quarter in the rematch, the Lady Buffs trailed by just four, at 16-12.
But it was all Wyoming Indian after that, as the Lady Chiefs rolled to a 38-point win.
“Their press just became too much for us and they made us play at a tempo we didn’t want to be playing at,” said Coach Jeff Hunt. “When we ran our press break well, we got a lot of great looks. We had a difficult time getting the ball in against it and I didn’t do a good job adjusting to it.
“We did a lot of great things, but we just struggled to score. We weren’t getting shots we like and had to rush them too much. Rebounding was also a struggle for us. We gave up way too many offensive rebounds to them and we only had six offensive rebounds.”
Ashley Gomez led Greybull with eight points, followed by Kennedy Craft with seven.
The girls put it all together against St. Stephens, leading at every quarter stop.
Hunt called it a much better all-around performance by his team, crediting the girls for playing hard from start to finish. “They did come out pressing us, but we did a great job breaking their press early on,” he said. “The girls worked so well together and worked to find open players. They made some adjustments on their own throughout the game and had great ball movement.
“Defensively we did a great job keeping them out of the key and making them shoot more outside shots than they would like. They only had six points in the paint. We also rebounded so well in this game. They had only three second-chance points and only six offensive rebounds. We did an outstanding job boxing out and going after every rebound. We had double the rebounds they did.”
Senior Ashley Gomez produced the best game of her career, connecting for 15 points.
“We did a great job getting her the ball and she shot 70% from the floor,” said Hunt.
Perla Rodriguez produced a double-double, with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
The Lady Buffs will play their Big Horn Basin Classic games in Powell, facing off on Friday against Thermopolis at noon and Wyoming Indian — yes, it will be their third encounter of the young season – at 6 p.m.
