Middle school wrestlers debut in Shoshoni

Seven members of the Greybull-Riverside middle school wrestling program went undefeated at a tournament Saturday in Shoshoni.

Earning weight class victoris in their first outing of the season were Marshall Brown, Kaysen Nyberg, Liam Wisehart, Sophia Wilkinson, Riley Wiggins, Maythe Garay and Harper Juneau.

Coach Mark Sanford said his opening roster includes 17 boys and nine girls. They got a later start than some area teams, as Sanford — believing “kids should be allowed to be kids” — gave them a full week off after their football and volleyball seasons ended.

But they hit the ground running in Shoshoni.

“We saw some great efforts all around,” he said. “The first timers need to realize basic positioning and where to be and where not to be to get in trouble and out of trouble.

“The returning kids need to clean up some bad habits they are carrying over from last year, especially on our takedowns.”

G-R heads to Worland for a tournament this weekend.
