Rodriguez, Atilano spark JV girls past Wind River
Sophomore Jasmine Rodriguez scored 14 points and senior Angie Atilano contributed 13 to help the Greybull Lady Buff JV defeat Wind River 65-21 and salvage a weekend split Saturday in Pavillion.
Coach Nate Boyer said the girls “really wanted to come out strong” after a four-point loss to Rocky Mountain, 38-34, the previous evening.
“We ran our plays really well and had one of our best games with regards to rebounding,” he said of the performance. Balanced scoring was a key, as in addition to Rodriguez and Atilano, the Lady Buffs got 10 from sophomore Shayne Cheatham and every player scored at least two points.
“It’s always nice to see everyone on the roster make a contribution to the score especially when the final result is a win.”
The Rocky Mountain game was a heartbreaker for the girls.
Down by seven at the break, they rallied in the second half, pulling to within two, 30-28, at the third-quarter break before eventually losing by four points.
Rodriguez sparked the third-quarter rally, scoring seven of her team-high 12 points. “She has been working all week on catching to shoot as well as driving more to the basket which contributed to her 12 points
“Some of the fundamentals like boxing out under the hoop and head and ball fakes are definitely some things we are reminding the girls to do during practice and the JV girls are great at making this a part of their game. The score didn’t necessarily show it, but this group of girls is starting to put some things together on both ends of the court and it’s great to see that at this point of the season.”
