Rodriguez earns all-state recognition
The postseason awards for the Greybull Lady Buff volleyball program didn’t end with the recent release of the Class 2A All-Northwest Conference team.
Fatima Chavez, Aleksey McColloch, Perla Rodriquez Davila and Wyatt Whaley were named to that elite squad after leading their team to a conference championship. Marlee Henson earned honorable mention honors.
Three of the four first-teamers — McColloch, Rodriguez Davila and Whaley — also made the All-West Region team. A new honor, Coach Sara Schlattmann said 2A West coaches followed the lead of 2A East coaches, who opted for all-region over all-conference because there are only six schools on that side of the state.
From the all-region selections, coaches then filled spots on the all-state team, selecting Rodriguez Davila as Greybull’s only representative.
“Making the all-state list is very difficult, particularly when you do not make it to the state tournament,” said Schlattmann. “I felt strongly that all of our nominees were deserving of this honor, but there are many athletes in 2A that are.
“It comes down to votes and Perla’s performance this season shows that she too deserves this recognition. She led our team in kills, attack percentage and service aces while maintaining a 91% serve percentage.”
“I was disappointed that Aleksey didn’t also receive this honor, as she was all-state last year and nearly mirrored Perla in kills, service aces and serve percentage. And Wyatt Whaley has done a phenomenal job of running our offense in her role as our setter. She had 608 assists and 94% serving efficiency and 189 digs.
“I can’t go without praising Fatima Chavez, who shined in her role as our libero and did an amazing job running the defense from the back row. And these athletes shined bright because they were surrounded by a team of players who also worked hard in their roles. I just am very proud of all of them.”
