Friday, Aug. 9th, marked Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday. The occasion was celebrated all around the country by USDA National Forest Service offices, including the outpost in Greybull. In light of the recent fire ban, Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday serves as a reminder to be good stewards of the land and do everything possible to prevent wildfires.
Smokey Bear originated in the 1940s as a cartoon PSA released by the USDA National Forest Service advising “Smokey Says – Care Will Prevent 9 out of 10 Forest Fires.” From there, Smokey spread like a “wildfire,” adored by children around the country for his cuddly appearance.
