Sprint medley team qualifies
By Nathan Oster
For the second consecutive weekend, it was Wyatt and the Relayers making noise for the Greybull High School track team.
Wyatt, last name Whaley, added another event to her state meet lineup, qualifying for the discus at Saturday’s L.A. Kohnke Powell Invitational after bettering the 2A standard in the shot put at last week’s Bill Gerrard Memorial.
Whaley threw 103 feet, 2 inches, a personal best and good for sixth place at the highly competitive meet, which attracted approximately a dozen teams, many of them big schools from the 3A classification.
“Another great week of improvement for Wyatt,” said Coach Nolan Tracy, noting that the sophomore’s PR prior to that was a 92-2, recorded at the season-opening Burlington meet.
At 103-2, she hit the 2A qualifying standard right on the nose.
The weekend’s other significant achievement also came in Powell — and like last week, it was a relay team that produced it. In their first time entering it, Addison Coscarelli, Ashlyn Chacon, Marlee Henson and Adeline Kunkel ran a 4:53.88 in the medley relay, bettering the 2A standard of 4:58.67.
Tracy called it a pleasant surprise. “A lot of it had to do with the 800,” he said. “Adeline doesn’t run the 800 and hasn’t been training for it, but said, ‘O.K., I’ll run it at that meet.’ It was kind of funny — not just because they qualified, but because after the meet, she was saying she might want to start running it. We may have found another event for her.”
The week before, it was a different relay team — the 400-meter foursome of Angela Myer, Caitlyn Hunt, Ellie Holloway and Marlee Henson — celebrating an AQ time, which it posted at the Greybull meet.
“It’s awesome adding three more girls (Coscarelli, Chacon and Kunkel) as state qualifiers,” said Tracy.
Another highlight on the girls’ side came Friday in Dayton, where Chacon placed first in the 100-meter hurdles and second in the 300-meter hurdles. Henson was also a winner at the smaller meet, taking the 100-meter dash.
While there were no new qualifiers on the boys side, Tracy cited the improvements of Elijah Rice, who threw 118 feet in the discus, betting his PR by 16 feet; Jesse Brown, who set a PR in the 100 meters with a 12.07, and Carter Peasley, who cleared 5-8 in the high jump, his best of the year.
The Buffs were scheduled to run a meet today in Shoshoni, but with inclement weather in the forecast, it was moved up to Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.
“A lot of teams will be going to Worland, which will be a lot bigger meet, but I’d rather go farther for a smaller meet,” Tracy said. “Plus, it’s our regional track and I like to give kids a chance to compete it beforehand.”
