Track team sets 14 PRs in Thermop
The Greybull Buffs didn’t add any new state qualifiers, but several athletes set personal records at the final track and field meet of the regular season Friday afternoon in Thermopolis.
The Bobcat Invitational attracted more than 20 boys and girls teams, including several from the 3A ranks. The Buffs didn’t have the numbers to compete in the team standings, as the girls landed in 15th and the boys in 21st.
But as has been the case much of the year, Coach Nolan Tracy’s focus has been on individual growth and it showed up in 14 personal records.
Marlee Henson produced two of them, running a 1:02.71 to place third in the 400 meters and soaring 15 feet, 1 inch en route to a ninth-place finish in the long jump.
Wyatt Whaley contributed the other team points, placing fourth in the shot put and sixth in the discus. She set a PR in the latter, throwing 105 feet, 2 inches.
The other PRs were set by Destany Shiplet in the 3,200 meters, where she shaved almost 30 seconds off her best time; Ashlyn Chacon in the 100-meter hurdles, and Avery Allen in the long jump.
Carter Peasley led the way for boys, setting PRs in three events (100, 200 and high jump) and scoring the team’s only point with his 5-8 effort in the high jump.
The other GHS athletes who set PRs included Shaun August in the long and triple jumps, Nikoah Sorensen in the shot put, Wesley Roll in the long jump and Isaac Vigil in the 1,600 meters.
Regional preview
Heading into Friday and Saturday’s Class 2A West Regional in Shoshoni, the Buffs have nine athletes who have qualified for the state track meet.
Coach Nolan Tracy said some subtraction occurred recently when a member of the 400-meter relay foursome left the team. The team had pre-qualified, but because makeup changed, would have to do so again at the regional meet.
Not counting the 400 relay, Henson has pre-qualified in the 100, 200, 400 and the medley relay — along with Addison Coscarelli, Adeline Kunkel and Ashlyn Chacon — and is close to doing so in the long jump.
Whaley has qualified in the shot put and the discus.
The only boys who have qualified to date are the five runners who did so in the 400-meter relay team — Carter Peasley, Daniel Baker, Caiden Sorenson, Jesse Brown and Anthony Chacon.
Tracy said he’s optimistic several more will earn trips to Casper this weekend by cracking the top eight in individual events or top four in the relays.
