Voters pass property tax for senior center
In Tuesday’s general election, voters overwhelmingly approved a continuation of the one-mill property tax levy that supports the South Big Horn County Senior Citizens District.
The ballot question passed by a margin of 2,5001 to 559, or 72% to 18%. The ballot question comes up ever four years. In 2020, it passed by a slightly larger margin of 80% to 20%.
Director Cynthia Johnson said recently that the one-mil levy generates about $130,000 annually for the senior center and that the money is earmarked for expenditures outside the normal operating budget, including kitchen upgrades and the purchase and maintenance of public transportation vehicles.
With candidates vying for three seats, the only suspense associated with the senior center board election was who would receive the most votes. Kristi Bonnel-Phillips took the honor, receiving 2,005. Diane Nuttall received 1,909 and Sherri Emmett 1,888.
